You need to slow down hoss. Who said he was funkier than P-Funk and others? I said if anyone had claimed those things at the time he was hot then it would have went over better then saying Timbaland and Kast are whoopin Prince's ass. And yes some of us do know about Kast before "Stankonia" And yes, if anything , Andre was influenced by P Funk moreso then Prince back then but you can't tell me that in recent years he hasn't started trying to do some Prince inspired work. Hell the linn drumm used in Chronmetrophobia (yes blaqueknight I realize others can use the linn zzz) is Prince-ified so miss me with that constant denial of any Prince influnece. And same with Tim and JT who has went on record saying the record is Prince influneced. Some of you mugs think that everytime someone said someone is Prince influenced that they arent, so stop jumpin up and down on that mark. Not smoking anything but maybe you should.

There is a middle ground somewhere in there, fanbot. I didn't deny Prince influence but that doesn't mean they are straight cloning either but I guess you didn't get that from my post so I'm stating it now. Of course Andre is "influenced" but derivative implies a much closer connection than what's actually there. Chromomentrophobia is a PERFECT example of Parliament influence exceeding Prince's. The only Prince association there is the Linn but the vocal arrangement, the vocal parts, the style of the bass line and the groove itself sound much more akin to P-Funk. If you ACTUALLY knew Parliament's music like you claim to, you'd find this undeniable but you just hear the Linn and think "Prince" so "miss me" with that lame example. Go back and listen to "Into You" by Parliament and get your knowledge up on where Andre was coming from. I myself pointed out a JT/Prince association on another thread but Timbaland's sound prior to his work with JT & Nelly F. has been very much his own sound, repetative though it may be. I can easily show you Timb's resume if you have any doubts because dude has way too many songs for you fans to be trying to claim Prince clone. Like I said, someone even so much as acknowledges listening to a Prince record (which damn never everyone has) and some of you go into full blast on them. Don't attack me for calling it like I see it.

Why do we always have put Prince VS. whomever we also like???

I can enjoy Outkast,Timbaland,Pharrel,Maxwell and others without ever thinking about who could replace Prince, nobody can!!
It's true,Outkast will do better on the charts these days,so be it,it's good they are influenced by Prince,or should they be influenced by Bon Jovi??
And there are a lot of Parlament/Funkadelic influences 2.

I have 2 agree with iconsweat however on Chronmetrophobia, the line drumm
made me think about Prince from the first beat.

You're so right. Music isn't a zero sum game. One great artist doesn't necessarily diminish another. There's room enough for a diversity of talent to flourish. I like OutKast because they're so different from the typical rapper. Kinda like P.M. Dawn. It's rap, hip-hop -- but they're trying to grow and evolve rather than remain stagnant. They resist the urge to rehash the same old stuff. Thats a good thing. Alexander 3000, in particularly, has exceptional stage presence. With better material, he could really be a force. I like Maxwell too. Pharrell? He's like a rapping Justin Timberlake in blackface.

Don't you think that has more to do with the music you are familiar with? If you listen to a lot of Prince then you would pick up on parts that remind you of Prince. the Linn drum has become a marker of Prince's 80s sound but if you are less familiar with Parliament than you are with Prince then its easily understandable why the Prince association would be first to come to your mind. Since I did (and still do) listen to Parliament, I noticed the similarities in the track down to the flanged clav. The ONLY prince association in that song is the Linn. Even the name of the song is Parliament-ish. "Chronomentrophobia" could fall right in with many song titles from the Funkadelic and Parliament era.

After seeing Idlewild, I'm not interested in hearing the CD and I love Outkast. I like Timbaland's work, especially Missy's earlier work, the song Promiscuous and the new Justin CD is good, but it's not Prince, no matter how much you play with the Linn Drum machine. It's not even fair to compare them to him because they do hip hop and Prince doesn't. Prince is in a class of his own.

But when you hear this fresh new shit on the radio, and it is so far from what Prince is putting out, you just want him to wake up and get his SEXYBACK!

Oh,fuck Timbaland!I can't believe at a site that supposed to be about an instrumenatalist,we're glorifying the likes of Timbaland. It is Timbaland & all these other producer types, that have ruined R&B,with their samplers or whatever they use to create this trendy "music"made for people who just want something mindless to play in the playground. It is not for people who really care about music, those of us who actually like the sound of live drums, horns, guitars, etc.I don't understand how people who've heard great musicianship from the likes of Prince,Stevie,Jimi,Funkadelic would then turn around & give someone like Timbaland the time of day cause his stuff definitely ain't about musicianship.

Co-sign. There are about three good songs on the new Outkast album. The rest of them start out promising or have qirky little riffs here and there and then veer off onto some unfocused silly bs. Idewilde is a clusterfuck of an album compared to their last three releases.

I've only heard the one song off of the JT and Timbaland album...eh. And that song he did with Nelly Furtado sounds like another one of those songs created just for commercials advertising cellphones, cars or something. Blah.

JUST PLAYING evillol's ADVOCATE (having not heard either album) . . .

20 years ago, when Prince and the Revolution released Parade as the soundtrack to Prince's own quirky flick, a lot of folks were saying the same thing. But like me 20 years ago, some younger folk somewhere are spinning or streaming this CD over and over again and will revere it as a classic in 2026.

Well if you really think about it Parade is a clusterfuck of an album with three good songs on it too. evillol It just so happends that when it came out I was so far gone into Prince that I ignored the sillness. wink

But seriously... ask quirky as Parade is at least the songs, while not what people were used to hearing from Prince up until that time, were complete songs. They didn't start out one way and then veer off into some other direction that had nothing to do with the theme of the movie or the rest of the album.

Let's not forget that the movie was made in 2004. They used songs from "SB/TLB" and a track or two from "Big Boi and Dre present Outkast". Had Idlewild been released when it was dpne, the soundtrack might have been different.

I think it could be a "1999" outtake. give it a few listens, it really grows on you, then you'll be sick of it cause it's on every 5 minutes. But its not a pop hit, its got some edge to it. and some new wave funk too.

With all due respect,I wouldn't want Prince to put out crap like "SexyBack".Yes,Timbalind can come up with some cool beats, but Prince is so much more than just trendy beats.

PREACH!!!! clapping

Timbalind,Jermaine Dupri and all these other "hot" R&B producers are not even real musicians. All they do is program beats and samples.Hand them a guitar or a piano and they wouldn't even know what to do with it! To me,"SexyBack" is just alot of noise. They're just making trendy, gimmicky music that's not gonna stand the test of time.People are still listening to 60s Motown because it's REAL music created by real musicians.Today's R&B is in such a sorry state because of all these non-musician "programmers" who are not creating real music. These guys have never heard of a thing called "melody".

Dude ain't fading out like some producer of the moment. He's already made his mark. Whether you like his music or not is subjective but he's already there. I can't hate on Timbaland. He's earned his out of being prolific if nothing else.

Yall sleeping on Timberland. The dude does have some skills. I dig him. Comparing him 2 Prince is a bit silly but the dude is nice.
