This is exactly the type of uptempo R&B song from the late 1980s that I don't like. Watered down pop. "I Wanna Be Rich" by Calloway was another one.

Remember that time when *NSYNC did a cover of this song (also produced by Teddy Riley)?

You consider this watered down? And in light of today's music on top of that?Wow you're hard to please. I do like your funk choices, though.

I haven't heard that term applied to a tune since I left the south. wink

The one that comes to mind for me would be Looking For A Love by Bobby Womack.
More of a country-stomp than a city-stomp. cool

Up the tempo a bit and that's a straight a sanctified beat. cool

I find it funny that folks that claim to hate country music don't see that beat's gospel connection.

Another down tempo tune that would also fit the mold is Al Green's Love and Happiness.
He does ramp it up a bit live.

Oh, now if you're comparing it to today's music, "Just Got Paid" sounds as funky as The Barkays' "Holy Ghost". lol It just sounds too crossover pop sounding to me, that's all. Most of my favorites never made it to pop radio....they were too damn funky. lol

You're absolutely right.I used to say I hated country,as well.I did have to reconsider that statement when I looked at myself honestly in the musical face.Gospel, blues,a lot of rock,soul,rockabilly....all closely related to country.Hell, the Commodores even got a little country on some cuts. And check out the coda of "everyday sunshine" by fishbone;what is that? It's there on record, but listen to old live performances of that and see how they get at you with the stomp.

You mentioned Al Green. It's funny, for reasons that are not disrespectful,I think of grits when I hear his name. His voice and his groove really have a down home vibe to them.It just warms you.It is the essence of some good 'ol cheese grits.
