Why doesn't Queen get the same respect...

As bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, or Beatles?

I find their music very catchy and enjoyable, but whenever we talk of great rock bands, they seem to get slighted.

What gives?

In your opinion. I think they were just as good as the other bands (I'm a big fan of Zeppelin) and imo, I think they were better live than Zeppelin or the Stones.

They'll NEVER get slighted by me. I could care less if others respect them or not.

Their loss..

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I thought the same thing...

Their music is glamtastic, absolutely outrageous, and bigger than big. They generated hits non stop for their entire career, their hits CDs sell like gangbusters, and they are played at every special event there is.

Plus they put on one of the best live rock shows around.

They get a lot of attention.

Oh my god!!! I'm a huge Queen fan!!!!

Anywho, from what I read in past articles... the reason why they didnt get as much respect as like other british bands is because of Freddie Mercury's obvious sexual orientation, and they being labeled as a 'gay band' and overall homophobia here in the states as least...they acutually did get respect outside of the US, but not here...you could describe their experience here in the states as 'bittersweet.' I think their peak here in the states was 'The Game' album, with the song 'Crazy little thing called love.' They came out with this album called "Hotspace" in 1982, and that when that whole 'no disco' thing was going on as far as I know, and that killed them here in the states, along with their video for the single 'I want to break free' after that people really thought they were a gay band ((which I thought the video for I want to break free was so damn cute)) or so I read

They've got my respect, but I'll never truly understand it either, because a lot of the male ((and female)) rock artist back in the day, as well as now, were either bisexual or gay, and who cared about their sexual orientation anywho as long as they kept coming with that good music!!!

Another thing...Prince had the gay rumors thrown at him too...but people seemed to except him...he took a huge career risk, especially with the controversey song...the lyrics were so risky for 1981, Prince was bold as all heck and didnt give a damn about what anybody thought, thats why I liked (and still do) like him sooooo much!!!!

I like the Rolling Stones too, but I think they were a little overrated!!!! I think their songs were very catchy, althought I dont care for the lyrics of Brown Sugar, a bit offensive...I like Led Zepplin also.

I am pretty familiar with the Queen catalogue, but the reason I bring up this argument is because:

a) Freddie MErcury & co. never are held in the same esteem as songwriters as McCartney/Lennon or Jagger/Richards. NOw for some this may be a bit blasphemous but I am going to say this: I would take Freddie MErcury and any combo of his bandmates over most of the Beatles or Stones collaborations.

b) They were not a one trick pony type of rock band. They moved effortlessly from the 1970's into the 1980's. I preferred the pre-synth Queen much more, HOWEVER,their 1980's work is just as melodic as their 1970's offerings. Becasue they dabbled in synths & disco, some people treat them as a pop act rather than a full-fledged rock band.

c) Freddie's sexuality: I agree with you 100%. They were campy at times, but whenever you mention Queen, one of the first things I hear is "the f** band" or "gay rock music". It seems as if in some circles, this made their music less rock.

I'll never get this(the lack of respect), but Queen is my fave rock band, followed by the Stones & Beatles.

In some instances, yes, they were better live than both of those bands. I think their music had a lot of diversity, but it was pretty hit or miss IMO. They have some damn cringe-worthy tunes to their credit and that may be a factor.

Plus, it doesn't help them gain any new fans when all they show of them on say, MTV or VH1 Rocks, is a song like Radio Ga Ga. ill

I have to add that most of the cheese factor came in in the 80s, like it did with so many other artists of the day.

Queen may not be put in the same upper level as the bands you mentioned but other legendary bands like Queen don't get the same attention either...few do.
All I can say is i've been told no one worked an audience like Freddie Mercury and I was finally able to see a live dvd of the band. He was so amazing. The band does deserve more than they get.

I was hooked on them after accidentaly finding thei "Greatest Hits Vol. II" in my cd collection 4 some reason...i put it in and after I heard "Under Pressure" I was hooked.

Them was the college days when I hardly listened to anything other than the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Dreamfirstborn, Prince and Queen for some reason. I dont know what it was about going to school in the suburbs that changed my music.
