It's a more mellow than I would have liked but overall I like it.

Saw him on the "Today" show concert series this morning - his performances were cool, though he seemed to be in a bit of a mood during the interviews. Didn't crack a smile, even when the young girls were screaming in appreciation.

I like the song he did for Herbie Hancock's album. Hancock's piano playing was awesome.

I was down at Rockerfeller Center yesterday, since my job is there and I got to see him do his first song and he really is good. I could tell that he was really feeling his stuff and that was good to see. I might give this dude a shot.

Stop this train is emotionally draining to me.. i love it.

His commentary started to wear on me.

Although the comments on his treatment of Bold As Love were very nice...

"I approached this kind of more as a songwriter than a guitar player. It's a beautiful, beautiful tune. Hendrix kinda gets the rap as being this guitar smashing LSD headband wearing, which is really untrue, uhm kind of guitar player. This is my defense of James Marshall Hendrix in one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And I certainly hope that I do it some justice if not complete justice."

...Guitar playing was also very nice.


And the Willie Mitchell collab was cool.

It's 'nice' but a bit too mellow. Could be a Sting album in places (Belief). The songwriting is as solid as ever, though.

I wish he'd let loose and deliver a kick ass Stevie Ray Vaughan style blues rock album (in the studio, not like Try), which I suspect he'd like to but is under record company pressure to keep the AOR hits coming.

I heard his single on VH1 this morning and I love it.

I wonder how his record company feels about his stray away from the
poppier sound of Room for Squares. The John Mayer Trio album got no airplay
and I can't see alot of these songs being as radio friendly as say, Your Body is a Wonderland

I think its wonderful sounding..

I like him -I'm thinking about picking this up.

Angst yields to maturity

JOHN MAYER is 28 years old, and he's facing mortality. "Continuum" (in stores Sept. 12) has the musical gentility that's made him the favorite mellow love man of the text-messaging generation, but the lyrics tell another story. Our hero is "slow dancing in a burning room" with his soon-to-be-ex lady love; he's eyeing vultures outside his door. "Keep me where the light is!" he moans on the soul ranter "Gravity." He's in the throes of a serious reckoning.

That's not surprising. Jimi Hendrix, Mayer's idol, and a host of other rock legends were gone by 30. Mayer's facing that other inevitable death, of his viability as both a teen idol and a Next Big Thing. "Continuum" has him solidifying a style suitable for adult listening.

Mayer doesn't need to worry so much. His greatest asset is his natural restraint — a grown man's gift. The best tracks on "Continuum" move as gently as a feather through their changes: "The Heart of Life" recalls the pastoral gentility of Paul McCartney's first solo album, while "Stop This Train" features an enchanting Lindsey Buckingham-style acoustic guitar run.

These laid-back ballads are Mayer's forte; when he gets more worked up, as on the politically minded first single "Waiting on the World to Change," or an overeager version of Hendrix's "Axis: Bold as Love," his mood tightens up unpleasantly.

A blues nut who's made acknowledging his elders a major priority — he's guested with Chicago great Buddy Guy and toured with veteran sidemen Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino — Mayer may feel that winsome reveries aren't dignified enough for a real man. But he's best when treading softly, finding the fluid heart of blue-eyed soul. If he keeps going in that direction, he'll be too smooth to die — in the hearts of his admirers, anyway.

Finally got to listen to the "First Listen".

This is a smart, well played, well written, soulful album. First impression is that it's the best thing I've heard this year. Love watching him develop as an artist.

In a rare case for the music world an artist names his album the one thing that actually comes to define what its all about: a continuation. This is what John Mayer does on this simply superb album with the uncomplicated cover: pushes the fold of his musical ability well past the pop radio-friendly sound that first made him famous and into a more mature blues, soul and electric guitar area. Add to this the usual expectation of his trademark soulful vocals and clever lyrics and Continuum is simply Mayer at the top of his game. Not many artists are willing to take that risk and try something new but this is an album that is a far cry from the if-it-worked-before-do-it-again formula.

Songs like Gravity and Vultures are revamped studio versions off of TRY! by the John Mayer Trio that deserve to be heard again. For the most part Continuum is filled with pretty laid back easy listening melodies like Dreaming With a Broken Heart and In Repair and only a few like Belief and Waiting on the World to Change can be considered more radio friendly (if at all). WhileWaiting on the World to Change is the song with the social message, everything else on Continuum is about life, growing up, love and lack thereof but all with a glass half full undertone. The Heart of Life is probably one of the best songs Ive heard in awhile and is the Daughter-esque track on the album. A more diverse use of instruments like the piano and jazzy trumpets can be heard on much of Continuum but the electric guitar dominates every melody and rightly so. This is the album you want to play on a lazy Sunday afternoon when its raining out and youre more than a little nostalgic. This was the album Mayer was meant to make.
