The Meters? Funk? Who R They?

Hey funk fans. I have been in a real funky mood lately, putting together cds of the old school funk that I grew up on such as Brick, Dazz, The Bar-Kays, Parliment/Funkadelic, Lakeside, B.T. Express, Slave, Kleer, Con Funk Shun and so on. When I was doing a little research on these bands I would always see The Meters mentioned or listed in the same catagory as these bands. Who are they? If I like the bands that I mentioned above, would I like The Meters. I very rarely listen to any new bands besides Mint Condition and the 'new' so-called 'neo-soul'people and I am trying to expand my collection.

Please help. Thanks.

They get mentioned quite a bit...

...Most recently here - http://www.prince.org/msg/8/200632

They're more Old-School raw funk than the bands you've mentioned.
Also they were started by Art Neville not Aaron.

Guess what? I am listening to Just Kissed My Baby right now, (from an un-named source) and it is RAW, kinda blues-y, southern-y soul like. I like it! I guess my bands are kinda commercial-y falloff funk. lol

Good grief Audience, U R A FAN!!!

ps...I could put them on the cd with Johnny Guitar Watson cool

Get their best-of disc, for a satisfying introduction to off-beat rhythms that even can be found in D'angelo's "Voodoo."

Their sense of timing is unbelievable.

HOLY SH+++!

If you guys don't own every Meters album you've got NO BUSINESS talkign about funk! I can't believe you people haven't already heard them.

I'm absolutely gob-smacked. If there's one band who defines funk from the early bluesy insrumentals right through to down n dirty funk it's the Meters.

Go listen to all their albums (especially Rejuvination) and come back when you have a funk education.

Basicaly it's as tA said "old school raw funk", New Orleans style. They date back to mid-60s as a quartet featuring Art Neville keyboards, Zigaboo Modeliste drums, Leo Nocentelli guitar and George Porter Jr bass. They were the house band for Allen Toussaint's Minit Records. And backed Lee Dorsey, Earl King and Johnny Adams. They had a number of hits on their own and backed artists like Dr John, Paul Mc Cartney and LaBelle.

In recent years, there was a sort of falling out between Leo, Zigaboo, Art and George (label mismanagement) and they put out a number of solo projects.

Art Neville has worked with his brothers in the Neville Brothers.

This is where Aaron comes in (he also has a solo career).

Art & George run Funky Meters. They play Meters' repertoire and some new tunes, but only 2 original members.

Leo tours quite a bit and has rocked my ass off.
Photo Gallery slide show:

Zigaboo has a funk-revue that has done a few dates with Bernie Worrell mostly in New Orleans and the Bay Area.

http://www.zigaboo.com/

George also has a cool-ass funk band called Runnin' Pardners and a rock project called DEEP FRIED.

http://www.georgeporterjr...index.html. They don't come out West Coast much. He's also hooked into the jamband scene so he's pretty active.

Finally, the original Meters have reunited. They're doing one-offs, but I missed the HOLLYWOOD BOWL gig a few weeks ago.

one of the reasons why they didn't have as high a pop profile, is that their first few records were all instrumentals, no vocals. i always considered them more af a musicians band, known better and appreciated by musicians than by the general public.

also, of note was that they were produced and and highly influenced by allen toussaint, great new orleans musician/composer/producer who is touring with elvis costello.
