My brotha, Al Green is still doing his thang, on a different level 4 the Lord most the time. But Al still performs them classic gems...An alltime great no-dout. If U were 2 look up "soul singer" U would see Al with a big warm smile greeting U. Soulful Brotha!

I love watching that performance of "Take Me 2 The River" With Al, Lenny, B.B., & Miss Crow...What a good time...when singers get 2gether like that & just flow...

Hell yeah, shame he doesn't have a real website. Even Soulpatrol.com don't have a page for him.

Craziness.

I think it's because the list owner isn't really an Al Green fan. He has referred to him as Reverand Grits, and compared him to Otis Redding by saying that if Redding had been around during the 1970s Green would not have been as popular. His bias keeps him from acknowledging Green.

That's a shame, I wonder if he never rated him as an artist or was left bitter when Al figured Gritts=God and made a U-turn in his career?

"TIRED OF BEING ALONE"...

That song is my favorite!!! I rememeber my mother had the album 'Al Green Gets Next To You'(1971) and played it constantly.Soul music doesn't get no better than that!

I really like Al. His voice isn't really "pretty", I mean his voice is not smooth as say Luther Vandross or Donny Hathaway. His falsetto is edgy and rough, you can him literally straining when he hits certain notes. He sings as if he's singing out of his nose. I always joke and say to sing like Al just pinch your nose real hard with two of your fingers and start singing...(LOL) Yet, HE'S AWESOME!!! Because he's original and very distinctive. You'd know that voice anywhere. You had a few that would try to imitate his techniques(like Phillpe Wynn from the Spinners..who's good in his own right). Al was the hottest soul singer of the early 70's scoring one hit after another one. Albums like LET'S STAY TOGETHER, I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU and CALL ME are early 70's soul classics.

But a secret ingredient in Al's music is the great proficient drumming of legendary drummer Al Jackson Jr. Al was so great a drummer that he can take a song and make the song his. His heavy emphasis on the backbeat and the unique way he strikes the cymbals can light a spark on any song. Got to give props to this great drummer was also a member of the great R&B/soul group Booker T And The MGs.

It is also worth noting that Al Green music sells alot down here in the south. It is very common to see teenagers ride around in their cars here in Atlanta playing some early 70's Al Green along with southern rap acts like Outkast, Eightball and MJG, Goodie Mob featuring Cello and Trick Daddy.

Mistermaxx, you and me were on the same wavelength. I was about to do a thread on Al.

DITTO, VERBATUM... classic77..

I ADORE Al's voice, & all of his classic 70s songs.
I've had the pleasure of seeing him live 4 times & each time it was beyond description..
each time I saw Al, they had to
LITERALLY
drag him off the stage, he didn't want to stop singing!

I would go classic77 1 step further & say that Al
IS
the GREATEST soul singer ever
(& we know there are more than a few who could be in this same category..)

off the top of my head, my favorite Al songs, in no real order:

Simply beautiful
Still in love with you
Look what you done for me
How can you mend a broken heart
Never found a girl
Love (l-o-v-e)
Tired of being alone
Your love is the morning sun
What a wonderful thing love is
&
what is PROBABLY my ALL TIME FAVORITE AL GREEN SONG:

FOR THE GOOD TIMES.
I have to fight myself to keep from crying, every time I hear this song..

I can't wait until the next time I can see Al LIVE..
there'll sho nuf be PLENTY of

LOVE & HAPPINESS..
!
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Looks like all your favourites are from that classic period of 1971-1973 too. What an output it was.

Anybody have Al's box set? 'Tis great stuff. Brother915, good looking out on the Al Jackson, Jr. front.

And that organ on "Love And Happiness" ALWAYS kills me!

Willie Mitchell has been trying for years to get Rev. Al to record a secular album with him (Mitchell) producing again. Rev. Al says God hasn't told him that that's the thing for him to do right now. Willie can't relate to the Gospel material...

Anybody here been to Al's church in Memphis?

Hold your warm and tender body...close to mine.

One more time...for the good times. neutral..sad..cry

SensualM:

I think my favorite part of "For the good times" is towards the end of the 2nd verse, where his voice gets real high..

"don't say a WORD about tomorrow.."

& then he finishes with that REAL HIGH improvisation after

"there'll be time enough for severance
when you leave me..

hey hey hey hey hey hey!"

that part just gets to me!

he just goes high & low in this song, seemingly so effortlessly..

a bittersweet, deep, beautifully romantic masterpiece..
yeah, "For The Good Times" has to be my favorite Al Green song..

I'm going to play this song as soon as I get home tonight..!
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..
