Chuckii Booker - Show your Love.

I got his self-titled 1st album, and the "Nice n Wild" CD when they came out.

Man, the drum programming and synth stuff on these is straight Minneapolis.

He was like Prince and Jam & Lewis combined.

I just broke out "Nice n Wild" again 4 a drive 2 Boston last weekend... JAMMIN' ... especially "I Get Around" and "Frontline"...

INFO:

b. 19th December 1962, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

Chuckii Booker has been prominent on the Urban R & B Contemporary front as an instrumentalist, bandleader, songwriter, and performer.

Born in Los Angeles, he was proficient on guitar and drums by age 14, but for a while preferred graphic art to music.

His godfather, Barry White, signed him to a deal with White's production company in 1984, but Booker left after White failed to issue an LP he recorded.

Barry White's wife Glodean is a close friend of Chuckii's mother.

He joined Tease, and played keyboards with them for three years.

Booker began to earn his reputation as a producer after this, working with C.J. Anthony, Barry White, Geoffrey Williams, and Lalah Hathaway.

He also recorded as an instrumentalist with Vanessa Williams, Troop, and Kool and the Gang, and toured with Janet Jackson as her musical director on the Rhythm Nation tour.

Booker has also recorded as a solo act for Atlantic.

His most recent release was 'Niice 'N Wild' in 1992 containing 'Games', highly popular on the UK soul scene.

Man, Chuckii is the TRUTH! He's proven himself on bass, (Touch), guitar (solo on Deep C Diver) drums and drum programming (various songs on his CDs, That's My Honey) keys (almost all of his ballads) and vocals (I Should Have Loved You). I did a Chuckii appreciation post last year and it got almost no love aside from the few "in the know" on Chuckii. IMHO, he did James Better than Prince ever did (SoulTrilogy) and is just an all around funkmaster. I think he just came out at the wrong time for his solo career. he was even musical director on Janet's Rhythm Nation tour. Dude gets mad respect. He's a true badass and defines the term "underrated artist".

DAG! "That's My Honey" was my Jam.

Yes, his versatility was thoroughly proficient. Man, I dug his drum programming, bass guitar, synth, guitar, and vox.

What U said about the timing is dead on, Bro. It is a '90s musical tragedy that this brother didn't get the recognition he deserved. Most definately a true badass, and it's good 2 see him getting some respect here.

OH. Also, if U break out the "Nice n Wild" CD again, and listen, check out the quality of both the mixing and the mastering. That's some perfect AAD goin' on right there.

I only have his 1st album on vinyl, and MAN, did I ever wear out "That's My Honey"... He could've actually scared Jam & Lewis, and made Prince a little nervous.

The tragedy could also stem from the fact that the only promotion he was gonna get at that time was from BET Video Soul, as MTV would've never given him any time. Ironically, BET had much less "power" then, but was so much better than it is now...

Peace!

G.

Chuckii was and is the man - glad to see him doin' his thang with Lionel Richie. One of my fave Chuckii productions is "My Heart" from Troop's self-titled debut. That was FUNKY! I remember learning the "Turned Away" guitar solo, 'cause that was a bad jam as well. Dude was mad talented.

One of the things I hated about the way Chuckii was marketed was his Bobby Brown-type appearances on some of the late-night shows promoting his first album. He was doin' the whole choreography/back-up dancers thing and I think that image didn't give us the real Chuckii Booker. When he appeared on one of the BET shows (one of the ones hosted by Sherry Carter), he did "Games" with just his keyboard - no dancing/backup dancers/out-of-breath singing - and he TORE IT UP!!! That's the Chuckii Booker that stood out from the pack, in my opinion.

Chuckii is first and foremost a musician - a great one - and though he may not be in the spotlight, he'll always be funkin' it up somewhere cool

4 real. I also thought the style of (non) promotion, and the timing were a little off, but man... he could jam... and tiiiiighhht. I was blastin' the 'Niice & Wiild' CD again on the way 2 work today.

I love chukki. Shame he only has 2 albums. "niice and wild" is alot better than his debut though.

U guys ougha check out Vince Ebo's album from 1992 called "love is the better way". His sound was just like chukki's on "niice and wild". He also does a few different stlyes on the album like chukki and will let a guitar rip here and there too. "its over" is such a happy tune, but tragic in its irony considering he comitted suicide a few years later

"looks like it's over
All of the pain is gone....."

RIP Vince.

He does have slight religious overtones, but i swear it is not gospel and is not heavy handed in anyway.

Wow. Im glad folks know about The Chuck.
Matter a fact,...this whole WHOLE board should know about Chuckii Booker...cause it is without dispute, ...if there was a single lone person in the past 15 years..who could have inhereted the throne from Prince,...it was him.

Folks like D'angelo or Maxwell,...dont even come close.
Chuckii is just in a whole 'nother leauge.
Chuckii belongs to that small elite group of super musicians like , Stevie and Prince.
Chuckii wrote all his songs, sang all the vocals, played every instrument masterfully, (no parts were sequenced!!) and could dance.
Chuckii Booker was one VERY frighteningly talented man.

Further, ..in fact I think ...technically...Chuckii's musical abilities were slightly ahead of Prince's.
In so far as that he could read music, and had a little more formal musical training than Prince. And it showed,...in his very often complex arrangments and chord patterns.
Good examples are from his first album,...which he recorded when he was only 18,..but it truly sounded like the musical vocabulary of a 40 year old!!
Especially tracks like ..
Dont U Know I Love U,
Heavenly Father,
and U Know I Love U

His two albums are both smoking!!
The first is a very mature sounding album. Very jazz and funk.
The second is a little younger sounding,..more funk and r&b.

But then after the Rythm Nation tour he directed for Janet JAckson,...he just up and dissapeared.
?????

Never did another solo album again.

Which is a tragedy,..because if had continued his musical career....I absolutely believe music today would be very differentfrom what we hear.

He had that much potential...and he was that good.

I mean like...scary...good.

So why did he dissapear?????

Damn, i wouldn't go that far. I mean, his first album is very dated and clattery with those huge pounding synths, and frankly, when neo soul came in, his sound was out.

Other cuts chukki was involved on:

Stayce and kimiko (wrote and produced 2 cuts)
David cassidy (plays synth on one track apparantly)
T.N.G (additional keys on one track)
Dupont (produces and writes track "hurricane")

Anyone else think of any?

Dated?
The was the sound of the time,..just like neo-soul was. Just like 60's and 70's R&B were sounds of their time.
All music is dated in comparison to the present by extension of that logic, bro.
Besides when (verveless)neo-soul come down the road , he had already been Mmissing in action for like 4 or 5 years.

Also on that first album,..the synths werent that pounding! Why do you say that?
Especially since every cut on that album has a live piano.

True, it was the sound of the time, but ? Ur right about the piano though come to think of it. Though "turned away" obviously uses synths. I really dig the video to "turned away". Not sure why, its just a cool video (i thought i was the only one who had it, but god bless youtube)

Anyway, u can see iam a huge chukki fan too. Oh, he was on troops first 2 albums (obviously) and did some work with philip bailey in 1994 ("Live it up" is killer)

Did u (or anyone) check out vince ebo?

Chuckii Booker stated in a televised interview when his first album came out that he played by ear. One can be harmonically sophisticated without being able to read music or be a fluent sight-reader.

Secondly, haven't you read any of the previous Chuckii Booker threads? There were some here not too long ago. People are well aware of Chuckii's talents. And by the way, he's doing quite well as Lionel Richie's keyboardist/musical director.

A lot of these subjects/threads have been discussed already - trust me, Chuckii Booker gets props here on the org.

Like Stevie you mean? biggrin
I hear you,...but those specific modes and patterns he used can only be had from somone who has had through training in musical theory.
His mother,...who actually plays with him on the last cut of that album,...was a trained pianist.

Writing "timeless" work is quite an accomplishment .
Just take away that time-limited style and analyse his skills ... that's what counts , cause that's why he's asked so much for studio and musical-director work .

Oh DAG!

This was the BET video that turned me on 2 Chuckii. I was crushin' on the cutie with the long curly hair that just sits there groovin', listening, and smiling... I recorded this vid, and copied all of the steppin. Then I bought the album, read the credits, and was like... DAG.

As I said before, along with one other wise one here, I think it was an issue of low promotion, and bad timing. Don't forget when this was, people... and be real. MTV wouldn't touch a Black R&B artist like this... Only Rap and Hip-Hop were promoted on MTV, via "Yo! MTV Raps." This video was strictly BET Video Soul with Donnie Simpson.

I'll say this again:

"That's My Honey" was my JAM.

Chuckii gets some props here, but not enough.

I definitely will show my love for Chuckii. This brother came out with some very good music. I love his solo work but my favorite songs from him are tracks he did for other artists. "Spread My Wings" By Troop and Treat U Right by Angela Winbush. I love his guitar work on "Treat U Right" That was him at his best.

Stayce and kimiko (wrote and produced 2 cuts)
David cassidy (plays synth on one track apparantly)
T.N.G (additional keys on one track)
Dupont (produces and writes track "hurricane")

Anyone else think of any?

Did anyone see Chuckii and Lionel Richie funkin' it up on "Good Morning America" this morning? I caught them doing "Brick House" and Lionel Richie's latest song. Chuckii and the band were TIGHT - and Chuckii handled the background vocals and did his thing on keys. Very cool performance.

Chuckii Booker was a fairly talented and original artist, but I thought some of his music sounded too much like Kashif's at times and a knockoff of Prince's at other times. As a producer, he had a rather locked-in style like most recording artists-turned-producers. But he delivered hit songs for TROOP (including "Spread My Wings") and Angela Winbush on "Treat You Right."

As a solo artist, he had success with "Turned Away," "Don't U Know I Love U," "Touch" and "Games." I pretty much liked those songs, and well as the title track "You Don't Know" from "Niice 'n Wiild." My problem, IMO, is I found most of his other tracks to be little more than disposable after those songs.
THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!
