music 80s R&B Song of the day: "Once Bitten,Twice Shy" by Vesta Williams (1986) music

(written by Gant-Williams)

Your name is Dracula
you suck the life right out of me
with a thing called reality
Why did I fall for you
you took my space and made it yours
now my mind's playin' tricks on me

Who's to blame,I'm havin' a dream
I can't wake up,that's what I keep tellin' myself
Oh,oh,oh,oh

There's no shame,I'm losin' control
I'm crackin' up,that's what the doctors keep tellin' me
I keep sceamin'

(chorus)
Once Bitten,twice shy
keep one eye open for the bad guy
I keep screamin'
Once bitten,twice shy
and be suspicious when the moon's high

Your eyes are cold as ice
I feel them starin' straight through me
with a hint of intensity
Why must it be this way
why am I here tied up today
in a room full of past mistakes

Who's to blame,I'm havin' a dream
I can't wake up,that's what I keep tellin' myself
oh,oh,oh,oh

There's no shame,I'm losin' control
I'm crackin' up,that's what the doctors keep tellin' me
I keep screamin'

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Who's to blame,I'm havin' a dream
I can't wake up,that's what I keep tellin' myself
oh,oh,oh,oh

There's no shame,I'm losin' control
I'm crackin' up,that's what the doctors keep tellin' me
I keep screamin'

CHORUS

Greetings, all.

I would say that Vesta Williams' best songs were ballads: "Sweet, Sweet Love," "Special," "Congratulations" and "I'll Be Good to You," her collaboration with saxophonist Najee (no relation, obviously).

Williams' powerful voice sounded very similar to Chaka Khan's, for whom Williams was once a back-up singer. She also was a stand-up comic when she wasn't in the recording studio.
THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

i don't know...maybe it's just coincidence...but just as soon as they go on the cover of Jet after dropping 100 lbs, their careers just disappear. maybe they were easier to identify with as being pleasantly plump, rather than the "i look like everybody else now" thing confused

I don't think that is quite the case. Vesta Williams was known more for sounding like Chaka Khan than her size. She simply couldn't sustain a long career, in part because of the similarity between her voice and Chaka's. Not to mention by the early 1990s, soul music was moving away from the elegant romantic style Vesta used into the more explicit, hip-hip-influenced style of ballads. Vesta was as much a victim of the changing times, just like similar singers such as Freddie Jackson and Howard Hewett.
