Several people have articulated exactly what they don't like about Janet's music and image. In other words, they have said WHY they have criticized Janet and her work. But you derided all that as "intellectualized opinions" and didn't respond to many of the points they raised. Seems like they're ready to debate but you're not?

I consider myself a Janet fan, but now I've heard two tracks from 20 Y.O. (COM and S.EX), and I'm still under-whelmed. sad I'm really disappointed because I wanted to be so hyped for this cd and era, but it ain't happening--and might not at all. (I thought it was going to be this funky sort of dance era for some reason?? ) I also didn't like the pics in the FHM(??) photoshoot: the whole sex-kitten image is just overplayed and boring to me although I'm sure a lot of fans still just love it. Plus, the pics were just too contrived and touched-up. In addition, I also don't like the situation where Janet's fans get their knickers in a twist about people just not liking a song or two--or all of a cd. Hey, I'm a RHCP(have been from the beginning), but lost interest in Stadium Arcadium real quick. I even bought the cd without really previewing it; unfortunately, it just didn't appeal to me although many, many people obviously really liked it. Plus, I've been a Prince fan for as long as I've been a Janet fan, and haven't liked every single cd he's put out either. In addition, Prince's personality has sort of annoyed me in the past.(He seems to be mellowing a bit now.) But that doesn't mean that I'm not a fan of his overall just because a few cd's, comments, or some maybe some less than flattering pics don't appeal to me.

In a way, I can understand why Janet's fans are upset if some of us not-so-impressed-as-we-once-were fans post criticisms on her site which I did recently about the pics. Not surprisingly, I don't think my comments or other fans sharing similar opinions were appreciated. I also criticized JD about having a hissy fit because fans were comparing COM and "Enjoy"--suggesting that "Enjoy" should have released before COM. JD complained about Jan's fans being negative on his blog or something. Well I visit the Prince section, and a lot of fans are negative about him, too: SO WHAT?? You don't see Prince or anyone from his team coming here to reprimand fans for criticizing stuff. The mods here don't seem to be worried if people have some criticisms of Prince--like they are afraid of any drama showing-up in the media or something? Nonetheless, even if JD and other Jan fans have a point about being critical on her official or other non-official sites dedicated to her fandom, this non-Prince music section of the org or any other general music section caters to a lot of people, so of course there are going to be those who don't really "get" Janet. It's just the way it is.

After pondering the situation for a while, I just think that sometimes we fans (and apparently some people close to the artists themselves) take stuff a bit too seriously. Is it really such a big deal if somebody else doesn't like a particular artist that we do--even if it's just some pics or a particular era? I just think that we take things too personally sometimes when it really ain't all that serious. It's sort of sad because I don't know if I really miss Janet as much as I do miss participating on her forums. I just don't feel like I can say anything positive at this point because I'm not just not really enthusiastic about what I've heard and seen thus far. Well... that's the way it goes. shrug

badujunkie: I definitely don't hate on Janet. She's a favorite.

But let's be honest. Her talent is limited. It is wholly dependent on the quality of her production, and her sex appeal. She's spawned dozens of clones(that includes any single-name songstress not named Madonna or Sade) that she is now competing with. Donna Summer couldn't compete with Janet Jackson in 1993. Janet shouldn't compete with these young gals in 2006.

Herein lies the dilemma. No one really wants to see Janet run around like she's in her twenties. She also sounds a little odd when she tries to sound like a hit-pop ingenue. But she can't fall back on her voice or her original formula.

She can still put out a good song, but she's not 20 Y.O. anymore. Do you want to see her doing this at 45? 50?

This statement is absolutely correct. I don't think we hate on Janet, we're just tired of her same old limited shit. Some people act as though she's something special when in fact, she's far from it. Her music is good, but her voice is very average and she hasn't done one interesting thing in years.

Urm, this is true. I think her last two albums had some good moments on them though, but she really is the equivalent of a photocopier churning out the same image, with ever-decreasing dividends. Her voice is thin and her albums are only as good as the people she's working with.

The funny thing about VoicesCarry was, in a lot of ways he had good sense when it came to music, yet when it came to the subject of Janet all that sense and objectivity just totally went out the window. I have my theories about this, but it would seriously provoke some controversy;lol

Janet is gorgeous and a great dancer but let's drop some science here. She has NEVER had any recording success without the production talents of Mr. Jam and Mr. Lewis. That is a fact NOT an opinion. There is no Janet hate from be but the 3 songs released so far have ALL sounded like dookie. Correct me if I'm wrong here but most of the time(my Man Prince being the exception) the BEST tracks on a CD are released first, no? One can only assume that the rest of the songs are not as good, I mean how many tracks do you have to here before you can officially label a CD a clunker?

If you want "specifics", then here goes:

So Excited - Could not be more unexciting. Janet's mumbling has gotten out of control; You can't understand a fuggin thing she says in this song. The beat is weak; the only musical part of the song that stands out is the Herbie Hancock sample. Unlike 'All Nite (Don't Stop)', this song doesn't make me want to get up out of my seat. I've been playing it lately, hoping that it'll grow on me, but to be honest, I've begun to accept that it won't. Plus, how sad is it that Khia's vocals in the song outshine Janet's.

Call On Me - Much like 'So Excited', there's no "hook" to this song. Just like '...Excited', it doesn't go anywhere. It's not building up to anything. Once you've heard 20 seconds of the song, you've heard it all. I think it's a sad state of affairs when the rapper you have guesting on the song makes more of an impression than the lead singer who is supposedly carrying it. 'I Want You' runs circles around this song; it had a hook, it had a melody, it had a good beat.

Enjoy - Not awful by any stretch of the imagination, but it's nothing really but filler. Sounds like something that she would've put on a B-side circa janet. "Enjoy/la la la la"? For a supposedly uptempo dance album, I haven't heard anything yet that would make me run to the dancefloor. Or even walk to the dancefloor. Or not make me walk off the dancefloor.

Call on Me is horrible. Her vocals are so bad. I would have thought that after 20 years, she would have improved on her vocals but not even the computer can help her here. The melody is forgettable and boring. There's no hook and the video made because it was overkill for a song that was so boring.

So Excited is okay, but again, its forgettable, once again her vocals are really bad and the Herbie Hancock sample, I don't know, it just seems like bad production.

Why does it have to be something specific? I wish I could say it was just something specific. The bottom line is that "So Excited" just doesn't make me want to dance. It's like it's somewhere in the middle of something without making a commitment to anything? I just can't explain it. COM... It's just boring--the vocals, the concept. Also, why is Janet so into duets lately?

I've been a fan of Janet's --since the Control era. I have every single one of her cd's. I even liked Damita Jo. "Just A Little While" even grew on me, and "All Nite" definitely made me want to dance. However, from the two songs I've heard thus far, well I just am not really excited about this cd as I once was. I was expecting more of a hard-hitting dance-track cd.. just sort of funky. So far, this hasn't been that type of cd for me.

Just a word about VoicesCarry: he doesn't seem like the type of guy who would leave a forum just because some people aren't happy with an artist. I think that guy has a lot of other interests besides Janet, or he appears to.

None of those are what I consider the best singles from their respective albums. Of course they all blow away "Call On Me" which has somehow made top 10 R&B in the U.S. Radio must be desperate for some Janet.

Ya'll quit arguing. This discussion is interesting to me because I'm trying to figure-out why I'm disappointed with the cd.

Also, I'm sort of mad a JD. He's gone on the official site talking about "true" fans, then the rest of who aren't blown away by every single thing Janet does. This is not the first time it's happened from her camp. It just makes a person feel like a traitor for having a friggin opinion.
