Aguilera Takes No. 1 Amid Five Top 10 Debuts

Christina Aguilera leads a charge of debuts in the top five slots of The Billboard 200 with the double-disc RCA set "Back to Basics." The set sold 342,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving Aguilera her first No. 1 album since her 1999 self-titled debut.

The first-week sales for "Back to Basics" are the most for a solo female artist since Mary J. Blige moved 727,000 in December with "The Breakthrough." Aguilera's current single, "Ain't No Other Man," has peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100 thus far.

Lyfe Jennings opens at No. 2 with his sophomore Columbia effort "The Phoenix," which sold 136,000 copies. The set also bows at No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Trace Adkins' "Dangerous Man" lands at No. 3 with 115,000, his best position on the Billboard 200 and most robust sales week to date. The set also provides the artist his third No. 1 on the Hot Country Albums chart.

Sister act Cherish opens at No. 4 with the Sho'Nuff set "Underappreciated," which sold 91,000 copies. The group's snappy single, "Do It To It," has peaked at No. 14 on the Hot 100. Following in the footsteps of Disney's mega-selling "High School Musical," the company's "The Cheetah Girls 2" soundtrack bows at No. 5 with 87,000 copies.


The BMG/Zomba/EMI/UME compilation "NOW 22" falls 3-6 in its sixth week on the chart, moving 83,000 (a 20% sales decline). After debuting on top last week, Rick Ross' "Port of Miami" (Slip-N-Slide/Def Jam) slides to No. 7 with 79,000, a 58% sales decline.

Rapper Obie Trice's "Second Round's on Me" (Shady) debuts at No. 8 with 74,000, while the Jive/Zomba soundtrack to "Step Up" falls 6-9 with 64,000 copies, a sales increase of 9%. Nickelback's Roadrunner album "All the Right Reasons" sits tight at No. 10 for a third week with 54,000 (+13%).

Other big debuts this week include "Snakes on a Plane: The Album" at No. 43 (19,000), released in conjunction with last weekend's top film at the U.S. box office. Jamaican superstar Cham's Atlantic debut, "Ghetto Story" enters at No. 53 with 15,000.

At 9.57 million units, overall CD sales are up 2% from last week's count and down 7% compared to the same week a year ago. Sales for 2006 are down 7% compared to 2005 at 335.02 million units.

Christina actually sold 177,799 copies of her 2 disc set, but she'd still land at #1 this week with those sales.

If that's the case, not huge numbers....Maybe good for her but if she can keep up the momuntem but not a huge debut....It might be too soon to tell but if they are pinning their hopes on her and others to save the recording industry, it's fucked!

I dont think they count it as two when they are judging positions i think they count it as two when they do certifications, gold, platinum etc.
Also another quick note The Pussycat Dolls back in at 15 are now 3 weeks away from spending a whole year in the Top 40 albums and there 6th single is out in Europe and here it will be released in mid september, probably the most consistent seller this year, as other cds have debuted and fallen off this cd has hung around

I thought Paris' cd was released last week, but I don't see her on the list.

That is fucked up but then again, judging by Meijer, Outkast wasn't selling but "Ultimate Prince" sold very well (unless they pulled a bunch of copies), It was nearly half price, originally selling for $22.99 and onsale for $11.99. They were a bunch of copies of the OUtkast CD when they stocked it and I didn't notice a lot of movement. I don;t think they had a lot of Danity Kane out but I think they sold...
It's so werid that everyone is afraid of soundtracks now of days when in the eighties they started to get really big (if not the seventies with "Saturday Night Fever" and "Grease") and in the ninities, they were right up there with the best selling albums, and were used to help the movie (and in some cases, did a lot better than the movie...."Reality Bites", anyone)

I think the smartest thing the dolls did was work overseas, theres a much better market over there, while the disc has sold 2 million here its sold close to 4 in other markets
