Listen to The Beatles' "Only A Northern Song". The bassline is hypnotic.

Paul was very important, as a bassist, during his time with The Beatles. Mainly because Paul brought a heavy r&b style of playing to the fore in rock music. He always had his basslines high up in the mix and he didn't stay paralyzed on the "root" notes like sooooo many other "rock" bassists. Paul's major influence on the bass was James Jamerson, famed Motown session man. And you can hear it. Take one listen to Paul's bassline on "I Am The Walrus". As far as Bootsy, one of the most progressive bassists ever. Bootsy was/is basically Hendrix on bass. Nobody brought the funk on ballads like Collins did i.e., "Munchies For Your Love", "I'd Rather Be With You". And his use of guitar effects on the bass, he simply took to another level.

These are the albums to get:

Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band
Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby!
Bootsy? Player Of The Year

or... if you like having everything in one package, get
Glory B Da Funk's On Me - The Anthology

For a live album, I suggest:
Live In Louisville 1978 (Note: It's a bit harder to find, and a bit expensive)

Tracks to download:

Stretchin' Out (In A Rubber Band)
Bootzilla
Very Yes
Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby
The Pinocchio Theory
Hollywood Squares
Vanish In Our Sleep
Body Slam!

biggrin That's a great description of both, especially on McCartney's contribution to the bass ....

btw, another great track, to hear Bootsy groove without a lot of effects, is Parliament's "Sir Nose D'Voidofunk(Pay Attention - B3M)"

Thanx. And yes, I agree 100% about Sir Nose. One of Bootsy's greatest basslines. His movement and placements of notes is SICK!

Good take. thumbs up!

In other words he brought melody to the bassline.
Someone else who was very good at this in the Rock genre, believe or not, was Peter Cetera on the early Chicago albums.

Munchies for your love is still my favorite bass solo of all time, it's almost like the Maggot Brain of the bass guitar. Another great Bootsy bassline is Funkentelechy.

As for Paul, Paul's bass playing over the course of I want you (she's so heavy) is full of surprises. And the bassline on Taxman is extra funky.

LOVE Paul McCartney's bass playing. As The Audience stated, he's very melodic. My favorite song with his bass playing is actually "Silly Love Songs". I know the song is deemed pretty corny, but I just dig the bass playing and the song is catchy as hell. It gives me the same feeling that I get when I listen to Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is to be Loved By You". Marvin's singing and James Jamerson's bass playing...magic!!!

"Let Me Roll It" is pretty cool, as well.

Geeze Bootsy and Paul, that is like comparing apples to pears.

Bootsy is a master in his field (funk), Paul is a master in another field (Pop).

And, no, they arent overrated, they are two of the best and most influential bass-players in popular music.
