God, I feel like hell tonight
Tears of rage I cannot fight
I'd be the last to help you understand
Are you strong enough to be my man?

Nothing's true and nothing's right
So let me be alone tonight
Cause you can't change the way I am
Are you strong enough to be my man?

Lie to me
I promise I'll believe
Lie to me
But please don't leave

I have a face I cannot show
I make the rules up as I go
Just try and love me if you can
Are you strong enough to be my man?

When I've shown you that I just don't care
When I'm throwing punches in the air
When I'm broken down and I can't stand
Will you be MAN ENOUGH to be my man?

Lie to me
I promise I'll believe
Lie to me
But please don't leave

"Every Day Is a Winding Road" is my favorite by her. It has Neil Finn on backing vocals. smile

she plays more than one instrument. she's top notch pianist in addition to her profciency on any number of stringed instruments. i will admit her songwriting goes in and out for me, but the times i have seen her live her voice has been very powerful. chick's got good dynnaics and a great range, and it's becoming stronger and stronger as she ages...

Sounds like you're pretty much agreeing with me. Her mother made her and her siblings take piano lessons as a kid and ensured they practised regularly, so naturally she's got some skills, and like I said before, I love her voice. None of that actually makes someone a true artist though. What makes an artist great is having their own take on life and the skill to put it into transcendent works. Michael Jackson, a man who can't play a single instrument, did that with songs like Billie Jean, and by inventing his own style of dance. There is no such transcendent quality in anything Sheryl does, only the occasional hint.

yes we do agree for the most part. and where we do not agree we shall simply leave it so.

I can't stand her voice or her music. I never could. She may have talent, this is true, but if you write crappy material, it's still crappy material. shrug Just WAY too bland for my taste. Plus, she's always just very slightly off-key when she sings, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. I must have dog ears because I can hear that shit a mile away. biggrin Especially with female voices. It doesn't bother me as much with male singers. hmmm I AM a fan of Morrissey. lol

If someone held a gun to my head though, I'd choose her anyday over most other female "artists" out there today though. Which says a lot about how I feel about them. whistling

That's the main problem for me too; the material. Just so damn average. Only in the musical and cultural wasteland of the last 10 years could she have got such a substantial career with such unremarkable tunes. Unlike you though, I really like her voice. The problem these days is everyone wants to write their own stuff, and the listener is often worse off for it.

lol Too true. Although it seems that lately it doesn't matter WHO writes the songs that make the whole world sing: the artist themselves or someone else. Most of them are still crap IMO. Where's Barry Manilow when you need him? sad

I think thats the reason I like her! Theres not much else! Saying that though, I dont have any of her stuff. I never get around to buying albums of the more bland, same-y artists. I dont turn it off when she comes on though...

when 44 looks that good, makes a body wonder why we (collectively speaking) are so fixated on 22 year olds being the end all be all definition of gorgeous. i think someone started a thread about hot women over 40 a while back, and i think her name should be added to that list cool

to me, the older she gets the better she looks. i didn't think there was anything special, looks-wise, about her when she started out.
