Sheryl Crow Appreciation Thread

I'm sitting here watching the interview on TiVo-like device, and I really respect her. And talent wise, I think she is awesome.

"Soak Up The Sun" is one of my all time favorite songs...Love it.

And dang she is hot. biggrin

"Steve McQueen", Soak Up The Sun" and "I Shall Believe" are kewl tunes.

Kevin Gilbert fans would disagree with this thread.

I had her first album and loved her right away. But then I kinda lost track of her for awhile.

I find myself liking her more and more again as I get older.

I always thought that Sheryl Crow is a really talented performer and songwriter, but still her songs are usually just 'nice' on my opinion. Then I heard "Steve McQueen" cool That's one great piece of music.

Love her voice and her looks. Unfortunately she's a mediocrity as a performer and songwriter. The kind of artist that some people think has substance because she plays an instrument and writes her own material, but actually her success owes as much to her image as any boyband or pop tart. Still, she's likable enough and certainly respects the music unlike some of her peers.

I'm a big fan of Sheryl. I think she has a lot of talent and is a breath of fresh air in the mediocrity of music that exists today. "Home", "If It Makes You Happy" and "Soak Up The Sun" are some of my favs by her

I don't pay much attention to Sheryl Crow because I've never cared for her. But there were two times that she stood out to me. . .

1. When she came out with "Soak up the Sun" I though it was funny how the song talks about being poor and how "It's not having what you want, It's wanting what you've got" because she ended up having this song on a credit card commercial! Don't credit cards do the opposite of what this song is trying to say? It is very confusing to someone who is poor and trying to "Soak up the Sun" to see a credit card commercial using that song to entice people to buy more with their credit cards. Maybe Sheryl decided that she could win love with a credit card when they offered her the dough to throw the song in a commercial like that.

My friend the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching TV
I don't have digital
I don't have diddly squat
It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got

[CHORUS:]
I'm gonna soak up the sun
Gonna tell everyone
To lighten up (I'm gonna tell 'em that)
I've got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame
I'm looking up o I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I've got a crummy job
It don't pay near enough
To buy the things it takes
To win me some of your love
Every time I turn around
I'm looking up, you're looking down
Maybe something's wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
Maybe i am crazy too

[CHORUS]

I'm gonna soak up the sun
While it's still free
I'm gonna soak up the sun
Before it goes out on me
Don't have no master suite
I'm still the king of me
You have a fancy ride, but baby
I'm the one who has the key
Every time I turn around
I'm looking up, you're looking down
Maybe something's wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
Maybe I am crazy too

[CHORUS]

I'm gonna soak up the sun
Got my 45 on
So I can rock on.

I think that picture tells you she's not as principled as she makes herself out to be in interviews. Celebrity is a powerful magnet even for celebrities.

I have to disagree regarding her image. To me she really doesn't try to live up to one like Madonna or Courtney Love do. But i'll take her music over Paris Hilton, Brooke Hogan and Cassie's anyday.

That's the whole thing. "I've got a guitar, I write my own songs, I wear clothes and I don't shake my ass" is as much an image as Madonna and her pink leotard. Sheryl doesn't intend that of course. She's just doing her thing. But the reality is if she weren't so photogenic she wouldn't have been given the same opportunities. She's presented to the audience as an alternative to the pop tarts but her work is consumed in a very similar way and is actually no more powerful than theirs. Madonna's back catalogue, for instance, would blow Sheryl's out of the water.

her self-titled album from 1997 or thereabouts is genuinely excellent. nothing earth-shattering but a great little pop-rock record with imaginative and very diverse songwriting, tastefully arranged and soulfully performed. unfortunately the album after that was shit. it had that diabolically irritating there goes the neighborhood single, my favorite mistake which was an annoying song made even more annoying by wendy melvoin running her choppy rhythm guitar style completely into the ground, and the rest was tepid lifeless mid-tempo soft-rock bollocks. it had a nice celtic-ish song called "riverwide" on it though which i still listen to every now and again. the album after that (the one with "soak up the sun") was just rancid. i think she's released something since then but i never bothered to check it out

her occasional inane, naive comments on politics or the principles of music dont help her case either. she needs to, like, shut up

Sheryl and her fans both suffer from the delusion that she is an "artist". She often speaks derisively of the "video stars" who dominate the industry, not realising that the same superficial, image based machinery that they owe their success to, is the same one she owes her success to. This delusion is what makes her say bland, naive things and actually think she's being very profound. Still, I don't want to criticise because I do think she comes from a more sincere place than her peers, but I think she and her fans are a bit naive about her place in the scheme of things.

I only like her on My Favorite Mistake. Oh wait maybe because I love Wendy's kickass guitar solo on it more than Sheryl's singing. Too bad a lot of folks to this day still don't realized it was Wendy's guitar on that song. confused

Good point. I see what you mean. So much of what the industry shoves down our throats depends on looks. If some of the legends of the past were starting out today, They wouldn't even get through the door. For example, Janis Joplin who had ten times more talent then Sheryl could ever hope for, would never get a contract today. Because..... Well I hate to be mean but she wasn't the most attractive woman around. Today's industry SUCKS!

I think she's great. I loved the Larry King interview. (Well, as much as I could ever love an interview by Larry King. She was good though. He was his usual pathetic self.)

She's one of the few women I'd switch teams for lol I like most of her songs, too.

she plays more than one instrument. she's top notch pianist in addition to her profciency on any number of stringed instruments. i will admit her songwriting goes in and out for me, but the times i have seen her live her voice has been very powerful. chick's got good dynnaics and a great range, and it's becoming stronger and stronger as she ages...

when 44 looks that good, makes a body wonder why we (collectively speaking) are so fixated on 22 year olds being the end all be all definition of gorgeous. i think someone started a thread about hot women over 40 a while back, and i think her name should be added to that list cool

Sounds like you're pretty much agreeing with me. Her mother made her and her siblings take piano lessons as a kid and ensured they practised regularly, so naturally she's got some skills, and like I said before, I love her voice. None of that actually makes someone a true artist though. What makes an artist great is having their own take on life and the skill to put it into transcendent works. Michael Jackson, a man who can't play a single instrument, did that with songs like Billie Jean, and by inventing his own style of dance. There is no such transcendent quality in anything Sheryl does, only the occasional hint.
