I'd have thought this was one of those impossible-to-answer questions. Expect a lot of Kind of Blue responses.
I'll go with Brubeck's Time Out album.

This answer may change from day to day, and one can't argue against albums like Kind of Blue or A Love Supreme. But those albums are otherworldly.
For today, and just for today, I'd pick something like: or Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

(I just wanted to post it officially first. ) Second, in terms of contemporary jazz that grabbed me by the lapels and shook me like a rag doll, I'd have to go with this. I *still* listen to this album and shake my head. These cats don't have to release another album ... EVER ... as far as I'm concerned.

I would go with Miles Davis' "In A Silent Way"

I don't think Kind of Blue is the best jazz album of all time. Maybe one of the most accessible, hell, maybe even the definitive jazz album. But there are some things by Mingus, Coletrane (especially 'Trane), Dolphy, Hancock, McLaughlin that I would consider better written, more transcendent and supremely executed than KoB.
Davis did have the best band that ever existed - his first quintet is what God had in mind for a "band."

This song kills "So What" in my honest opinion. The album is the reason why I picked up the saxo-mo-phone!

I would pick this one:
But I think I'll choose this one as the greatest: No other jazz album, probably with the exception of Mile's Kind Of Blue, has really put me in this spiritual mood that motivates me quite like A Love Supreme. [Edited 8/23/06 21:27pm] Check me out and add me on:

Wow! Just one? Here's a few slightly less than obvious choices that always make me smile....
Miles - 'Miles Smiles' (Circle is just beautiful) and 'In A Silent Way' Thelonious - 'Monk's Music' and 'Brilliant Corners' Andrew Hill - 'Blackfire' Herbie - 'Maiden Voyage' Kenny Burrell - 'Midnight Blue' - so laid back it's untrue.... Cannonball Adderley - 'Something Else' Duke Pearson - 'Sweet Honey Bee' (just plain and simple happy music!) Loads more but I won't bore you! And of course, if you go with the Blue Note stuff you get some of the best cover art ever produced....

Kind of Blue, in my mind, is otherworldly, so much so that it almost transcends jazz. Like I said earlier, it and A Love Supreme are in categories of their own.
