Funkadelic:The Westbound Years vs. The Warner Brothers Years

If you wanted to introduce someone to the music of Funkadelic which era would be more definitive in your opinion? To me the Westbound era was more rock influenced. It had a more gritty, unpolished sound that wasn't influenced by the popularity they experienced after the Mothership Connection album of Parliament. After that album the sound of the two began to merge until they could not be distinguishable. Any opinions on this?

Westbound definitely..Standing on the verge of getting it on was released for starters on Westbound! Warner years were still superb but the sound was closer to parliament in a lot of respects, Slicker and radio friendly, still wacked out though.

Damn, it's all classic stuff but the opening trio of raw sounding Funkadelic albums hit me hardest of all so yeah the Westbound era was the freshest.

The Mothership will fly just like it always does, fly away, fly away.
The funk it will survive just like it always does, funk away, funk away.

My personal preference is the Warner Bros. years, but I really like the Tales Of Kidd Funkadelic album. Let's Take It To The Stage is nice too. I like the "March To The Witch's Castle" on Cosmic Slop and the title track. Man, I am convincing myself otherwise as I talk about the Westbound years...lol. But, Knee Deep was the be all end all of funk. Nothing will ever again be as funky as that.

Peace,
JD
