I think India's a welcome change from the barrage of negative, determined-to-be-as-hard-as-a-man-while-being-a-tramp offerings we typically get from black songstresses topping the charts. She's got great singing skills, and really connects well with her "look on the bright side" routine. "Private Party" isn't a masturbation song. It's about self-esteem, taking an inventory of your state of mind and direction. As for not seeming able to connect well with people's everyday experiences or being unable to express herself honestly, I find that curious. I don't see that in her work, and ... well... we're on a site dedicated to a man who refused to publically acknowledge the death of his newborn son. I wouldn't call her a contender to the throne, in that category. Hel-lo! People are getting cold thats what happend. Imagine Earth Wind & Fire emerging in this day of time(with the same message they delievered) I could see how everybody hammer their craft as too "campy" or too "SUNSHINE"(funny use of term btw ). Not comparing the 2 by any means, but India is from that school(esp Stevie Wonder), their whole craft is based upon spirituality and positive energy, its not on their blood to take a habbit of dwelling. India is anything but SAFE. If she did want to be approved by the masses(she would've done the same shit ya'll asking - which is what basicaly 90% of what these fatherfuckers are doing to be on heavy rotation). and i repeat, then india herself shouldnt have sold the album the way she did...she set up expectations which she was not able to keep. furthermore, EWF has grit in their music...yes, they may sing about positive things but their music is so much more complex...the arragments...the melodies...theres darkness in a song like "lets groove"...theres nothing as honest as "after the love is gone" or "reasons" on india's album. to be honest, when i hear all her "dont worry/be happy" lyrics i feel like she is hiding behind all that...thats its fake. sorry, but thats who i feel. and i dont want to take away your appreciation for her...but i just cant see the similiarities with EWF... and furthermore, if the woman sings another lyric about Stevie Wonder im going to pull my own hair out...and i guess that really gets to my biggest beef with her...its the "sameness" in her lyric subject. Neither do I I just threw their name to put an example of what I'm talking about, not comparing her to them(like I said earlier). I guess I could see where you coming from,,,,,but good god almighty, man We're on Prince's site, the man who's famous for hiding behind sexual songs in order to cover his pain, we're talking about a man who feels thats indecent to show your pain(The whole incident of him ripping the original 'Empty Room' apart and many other incidents being mentioned in DMSR). So, we're not really entitled to address other artists for hiding behind their songs,,,or being fake. Becoz we support the biggest of them all.

When I listen to EWF or Meshell or even Prince... there’s an experience that takes place that I don’t know if I can articulate. There are textures to their music. It can be happy music but within that happiness there are layers and levels and if it’s a whole cohesive album, that’s when it truly feels like stepping into an atmosphere. It is rare but beautiful when achieved. With India, who I enjoy, I don’t always get that. And that’s okay I guess but on this album in particular, I don’t feel enough depth and range. And again, I need some bass and a good groove from time to time even if it’s a slow one. But we could use more artists like her. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

SoulAlive said: Rhondab said: oh good grief. self.... not meaning her damn coochie.....not a celebration of the coochie. can ya'll think a little deeper than some nasty stuff... I was thinking deeper. What better love is there, than the love of one's self and all of the parts that go along with it. I was not trying to be nasty. Before we can ever love anyone, we must first learn to love ourselves. This is what I think she is trying to convey in the song. Also, at the end of the day, all we have is ourselves. If talking about our genitals is nasty and taboo, could loving ourselves be considered taboo and nasty... Just a deep thought. [Edited 8/28/06 6:44am] "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

[Edited 8/30/06 1:59am] It's good because she really did not do anything to the original. That song was a good song from the start. She just sang it like it was. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

so,what's the deal with the song "I Am Not My Hair"? I heard that the song was remixed several times, and that the version on the CD is different from the previously released single version? why was the song reworked so many times? Did Pink really appear on an earlier version?

It was orginally recorded as a duet between her and Pink. Here are some of the details behind it. The following was taken from an interview that she did with Vibe magazine: The first single from Testimony is “I Am Not My Hair”, a song that actually began as a duet with Pink and was ultimately released with India singing solo and later remixed to feature Akon who won the guest appearance over rapper Shawnna of Disturbing Tha Peace. “I actually recorded 'I Am Not My Hair' with Pink and that was the original version. It wasn’t up to me so I had to let it go. Then I did this remix with Shawnna. What she did was ridiculously dope,” remembers India. http://www.vibe.com/news/...testimony/ "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Agreed. This is a very good album. I don't think it can touch Voyage to India, but I think it's as good as her debut. Nothing she does can touch VTI, that was better than her debut and a damn shame it didn't get the proper airplay, but what else is new about the treatment of Neo Soul artists? ~This brown experience made me the man that I was meant to be~
