Nelly's "Dilemma" Is That It's Really "Hot In Herre"! (((1st Time In 24 Years, Artist Holds No1 & No2 On Billboard!)))

Hey... this doesn't happen often. So I thought I'd post this... read on:

---

By Roger Nead

DID NELLY SELL HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL?:

Seems there's no stopping the latest rap superstar, as NELLY holds down the top two spots on the Hot 100. He's the third artist to do that this year, following ASHANTI and JA RULE. However, while ASHANTI, and JA RULE were only featured artists on one of their top two hits, NELLY is the lead artist on both "Hot In Herre" and "Dilemma" (which "features" KELLY ROWLAND). This is only the third time in pop history that has happened. The last time was on April 15th, 1978, when the BEE GEES were at #1 with "Night Fever" and at #2 with "Stayin' Alive," both from the soundtrack to SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. Before that, you'd have to go to April 25th, 1964, when THE BEATLES held #1 with "Can't Buy Me Love" and #2 with "Twist And Shout." "Dilemma" is going to defeat "Hot In Herre" at the top any week now. And when that happens, it will become the first duet to top the chart by artists with rhyming names.

The massive popularity of rap music right now reminds me of the peak of disco music in 1979. Disco hits spent a total of 28 weeks at the top that year. The following year disco was declared dead. Rap could be next!

---

Prince had the Top 2 positions as a per4mer on one, and a writer on the other... I think it was "Kiss" at Number 1 and the Prince written Bangles' hit "Manic Monday" at Number 2 back in the 80's... 'course I could b wrong.

What do U think?

(I think the edit notation sucks! hammer)

Question:

Why is it called 'Hot in Herre' instead of 'here'?
I can tolerate rappers using 'z' instead of 's' (like boyz) but I think in this case it is just naff.

I think it's "herre" 4 the way he verbally holds the "r" in the enunciation.

And as far as Rap dying tombstone

whofarted

They've been predicting that death 4 a looong time. We should get used 2 it.

I'm still not buying Nelly, Ashanti's, or Alicia Keys music.
To me their music isn't worth writing home about.

Is that what he means? I thought maybe he was trying to show of his German roots or something. wink

I still think its naff. And the rest of the lyrics are so embaresingly (sp? Can't be bothered to check) bad. It makes me think of lines teenage boys would say to try and get with the girls. rolleyes
Yeah boys...like we're going fall for something so obvious.

This song and that fool disgust me. I can't flip through the radio or the TV without this ugly nappy ghetto rat with all his hoochies panting about wanting to take their clothes off! There IS no protecting my 10 year old from this mess! It seriously pisses me off that it's being crammed down my throat whether I wanna deal with it or not. Anyone else smellin' me on this?

Rap is DEAD! Nelly, is so repeative and linear. Sounds like nsync rap. While true rappers were talkin bout, God, politics, philosophys, now they talk bout crap, like how many women they had, how many cars they got, and what there drinkin, which inevitably is, Crystal. Rap has no message now its just nonsense.razz

It depends on the artist...

They've been talkin' about cars and clothes since the beginning (Sugar Hill Gang, Kurtis Blow, RunDMC, just 2 name a few).

There's only been a few who have taken the road 2 political statements. (Public Enemy, Grand Master Melle Mel, Ice-T, just 2 name a few).

And there has always been the jokers (the Fat Boys, DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, Outkast, Beastie Boys, just 2 name a few).

Nothing's changed.

Everything's the same.

Except now u can get a Grammy award in the Rap catagory.

I listened to Chuck D being interviewed on Power 106 yesterday in LA and he had some really interesting things to say. He restored my faith in hip hop and rap as message music and art with a purpose. Also, I love MaaSen & Vgurra, Tori Fixx, God-Des (www.gayhiphop.com). Rap is still viable.

I think if you look at Nat's profile and see the type of rap groups he likes (Dead Prez, The Coup, etc.) you'd understand that he probably means that the "rap" music that is popular today is materialistic crap. How much longer is the public going to buy this bullshit? This is what we should be protesting. With very few exceptions, popular rap music today sucks and gives rap a bad name. The last thing black youth need to be trying to emulate is Nelly, Jay-Z and most other artists on the list June7 created.

Outkast is cool though.

On April 15,1978,the top three songs in the U.S. were...

1) "Night Fever" by The Bee Gees
2) "Stayin Alive" by The Bee Gees
3) "Emotion" by Samantha Sang

The third song was written and produced by The Bee Gees and they also sing background vocals. So it is essentially a Bee Gees song too.

You think OutKast is a "joker" and that they belong in the same category or on the same list as Fresh Prince and Fat Boys?? That's almost blasphemous! OutKast may have a LITTLE humor in their music, but they're normally dead on point, lyrically and musically!!!

While "I'm Sorry Ms. Jackson" and "Rosa Parks" were politically well written jams.. I gotta refer 2 "So Fresh, So Clean" and "The Whole World" as a glorious attempt at comedy relief...

BTW - Jokers does not = it sucks...I love them!

But I see what u're saying... Fat Boys and Outkast r on totally different planets. I was just trying 2 make a point... and, of course, I could be wrong. eek

When I first heard Outkast's Bombs over Bagdad, my immediate thought was of Prince and his flirtation with hip-hop/rap and how something like BOB was what Prince could/should have done.
But what do I know...

It should have been called, It's Gettin Hot In Her...
That would have been more to the point!!
Garbage, pure garbage...not all of rap, but that song is terrible.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

but if you listen closely to the rap Nelly wrote for the charity single cover of "What's Goin On", you will hear he can actually come strong from a political angle. I think what happens in rap is the same thing that happens in pop and so called R&B, which is one image becomes too glorified and makes money and record labels persuade artists to "conform to the mold". What we really need to start doing is identifying what is rap and what is hip hop. Rap is when you say words to a rythym or beat and doesn't necessarily mean anything it is just catchy and sounds good. Hip hop is a culture it informs you of a certain lifestyle or maybe even neighborhood it gives you an inside view of a way of life it isn't just a genre of music. Nelly, P. Diddy, Fabolous, Trick Daddy are rappers. Mos Def, Common, The Roots, Public Enemy, KRS1, and the Nappy Roots are examples of hip hop artists. It is just like every other music, you got your fakers out to make big bucks and you've got your real artists who are innovative and out to make real music and real relevant statements. It's just that the latter tend not to get the spotlight so the others tend to represent why people think the music will die.
