This guy was supposed to hook up with Jimi although he's on Voodoo Chille (The long one.) [Edited 8/25/06 14:27pm] I don't think that's Noel Redding in the top pic - it looks a lot more like Steve Winwood I've got to say I'm confused by the criticism of Noel here, for several reasons: 1) He was selected by Jimi Hendrix to play bass in his band. He was one third of one of the most influential bands of all time. I think he did pretty well, and people seem to enjoy the music. No-one's returning their copies of Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold as Love or Electric Ladyland - 'can I get a refund? the bass playing's too fearful'. Show some respect to the classics, and the artistry that went into them. They are what they are because of who played on them. 2) Sure, Noel wasn't a bassist by trade, and yes, it showed. It showed for the better - the Experience broke the rules of the guitar/bass/drums combo - fuck 'in the pocket' - let's go freeform at 100mph. He was the rhythm section of that band on his own, between Mitch and Jimi's duelling. Being different and challenging is the essence of rock'n'roll. 3) What guitarist isn't jealous of Jimi Hendrix? Anyway, a few more bass players of varying styles and ability for the list: Billy Cox - a different style for a different Jimi Norman Watt Roy - the Blockheads Paul Simonon - the Clash - purely on the strength of the Guns of Brixton, and for making the bass look really fucking cool Carole Kaye - Phil Spector, the Beach Boys, Ray Charles Aston 'Family Man' Barrett - Bob Marley, Augustus Pablo etc etc Cliff Burton - Metallica

Whoever played bass on a lot of those Motown classics should get their props too. Those early Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & The Pips and Temptations hits all had killer bass lines to them. Listen sometime, You'll see.

Can't believe I forgot Cox! I think Carl Cranshaw posted a picture of Carol Kaye, earlier in the thread. Regarding the criticisms on Noel... I realize that's subjective. I know a lot of people that liked Redding's playing. And those records are undeniable classics. But I was never crazy about his style, and a few of us were agreeing that for us, his playing wasn't the greatest. It's certainly not going out on a limb to say he wasn't a particularly gifted bass player. I think his playing was kinda stiff, which is understandble since he wasn't a bass player by trade. He certainly wasn't horrible, It added a certain sound to the proceedings, but it's also no secret that Hendrix himself was growing increasingly dissatisfied with the basslines, often overdubbing the bass himself in some cases. This was especially true by the time they were recording Electric Ladyland, and Jimi began seeking out other players like Jack Casady and Jack Bruce. It is also telling that after the Band of Gypsies dissolved, Hendrix brought back Mitch, but nixed Noel. ... This guy doesn't get much play.
But in terms of the 60s Rock era (on the American side of things) he led the charge for "lead bassists"... ...Tim Bogert Both bands he most closely associated with, Vanilla Fudge & Cactus, have reformed and are currently gigging again. (For those wondering, Beck, Bogert & Appice doesn't count. ) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. The weird thing about that pic is whoever that is... ...is holding a Danelectro Longhorn guitarlin. BB&A was soooo disappointing and was pretty much doomed from the start. There's a footnote to this story. Two sets were played that night. The first was recorded for possible release. Before the second set began, Tim Bogert got into a fight with Jeff Beck and according to Carmine Appice, you can hear the anger when Beck played the second set. Appice also got the stage engineer to record the first four songs from the second show and he claims Beck played even better. Michael "Flea" Balzary has to be one of the (is not, the) greatest bass player of all time. I love his ultra-fast punk/funk style of playing bass. He's so damn fast and plays with such precision. He's a great bass player.
He's also an outrageously awesome show man (as you can see from the pics). Flea's awesome.

It's all about The Bruce! Most people played, and still do play the bass as a background and standard rhythm section instrument. But Jack Bruce solos at some point in almost every song. And in Cream he used to play solos that were on par, and often better than Claptons on the guitar.
