Who are some backup or session singers that struck out and became successful on their own?

Sheryl Crow
Luther Vandross
Bette Midler

I know there are others but I’m not talking about singers who came out with one album and then disappeared or went back behind the scenes like Trey Lorenz.

Barry Mannilow was Bette's first Music director, piano player and vocalist, and one of her first Harlettes was Katie Segal from Married With Children. Bette was on Broadway and did the bathhouse circuit I do not believe she was anyone's background vocalist.

Madonna sang back up for Patrick Hernadez of Born To Be Alive fame

I hope this comment is a joke....being banned for not putting the person who they backed up for...seems way too harsh...anywayz

Mary J. Blige sung backup for Father MC and some more artists on the now defunct Uptown Records before her debut album in 1992.

it's ok... but from gay 101 and the fact my mom in a HUGE Divine Miss M fan the Harlettes are her backgroud singers. It was just a name she gave them so she cold call them up on stage and introduce them.

Okay, what's really pathetic is I used to own this album! But I didn't learn about Tori until about 96 so it wouldn't have rung any bells. I've since lost it.

also, patrice rushen was the bandleader for that show and played keyboards on the album, and i think she can also be seen in the film that accompanied it.

She is so fucking amazing as a background singer to the Stones....saw their last 2 tours and they give her time to show off her chops and she's a crowd pleaser for sure...she leaves you wanting more...she's also worked with Tina Turner.

According to what I read, Sylvester was one of many Bay area acts they did vocals for.

And the music world was better for it.

I don't know of any guys aside from Lillo Thomas. He had a few solo albums. I automatically connect him to Fonzi Thornton because they often worked with the same artists. He had one solo album.

The Blackberries

They were the go to backup singers for groups that needed a dose of soul in the mix. Apparently they are on lots of stuff from the late 60's thrugh the mid 70's. Here's a few...

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (Tour)
Steely Dan - Aja sessions
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St.

I remember Lillo Thomas! He was all over Kashif's albums, and he sang backup on most of the songs that Kashif produced for other artists.

I think it was Two Tons O' Fun a/k/a The Weather Girls that started out as backup for Sylvester. I know they showed off their vocal skills on the song, You Are My Friend (Been Around). Then Martha Wash sang backup or featured in C+C Music Factory and Black Box.
