Isn't bad 80's worse than disco? Disco is pretty much universally trashed by critics but I must say I find way more basslines, and crafty horn arrangements in disco from the 70's than I do in bad 80's crap.
For instance - I would rank the Pointer Sisters "Neutron Dance", and stuff like that as the worst ever.

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I really love most good disco music, (and not the overplayed I Will Survive, It's Raining Men, and the damn Village People that if I hear one more time I'll turn violent) but I'm sort of burnt out on it now. But there are some really great underrated or just unheard of disco songs that make me love the genre again when I hear them. And yeah, the 80s had some REALLY bad and cheesy songs, but I think comparing that to disco is apples and oranges. I also like a lot of disco, but I'll give the nod to the '80s. "Cheesy" != "Bad" "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Why would middle aged white men from the 70s have any disire to saying anything good about the music listened to by gays, blacks and latinos? Even Kylie's stuff has huge disco influences Bad 80's is still great though. Like Starship "we built this city". Awesomely bad song as VH1 would say. "Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember We built this city, we built this city on rock an' roll" I sing those 2 lines all the time, and people find it hilairious. "Marconi plays the mumba..."? WTF, but its awesome anyway The worst 80's songs are usually songs that have that harsh digital early cd sound, with synth pads for drums and icky keyboards. In other words, the most dated songs always get bad raps, and the 80's is full of them.

So yes i got that bit, but playing the mumba? Its a pretty random line in a song so commercial. Me and my brother and sister use to love that song as a kid. I still do love it actually

Yes, he's credited with inventing the radio. The mamba is a snake. I think Bernie Taupin (yes, Elton John's co-writer wrote the lyrics) meant "mambo" (which actually rhymes) or "samba." Deep analysis of these lyrics is priceless "Someone's always playing corporation games Who cares they're always changing corporation names We just want to dance here, someone stole the stage They call us irresponsible, write us off the page" Hmmm. Maybe some club they go to keeps changing names but the actual club is the same (i know that feeling). And maybe "someone stole the stage" is reference to maybe the club getting damaged by their dancing so "they call us irresponsible.....". Yep, i got it!

70s disco music is waaaayyyy more interesting and exciting than the bland,over-produced,synth-heavy,drum-machined crap that dominated in the late 80s.At least in the disco era, they were still using real instruments, for the most part. You had horns, trumphets, violins, etc.Listen to a Chic or Barry White album from that period....it sounded like an entire orchestra was playing! Here's something to think about: in 1979,Donna Summer released the song "Bad Girls".In 1989,she released "This Time I Know It's For Real".You tell me,what song is better?

Disco was the absolute best. It was my first love and it influenced absolutely everything I listened to my entire life.
It was because of disco that I got into funk. Disco itself was very funky. It took funk, got rid of the jazz, sped up the tempo, and made it more danceable. Disco was univeral and crossed all racial lines. When it "died" in 1979, rock and new wave (which sounded nothing like disco) was taking over pop radio. I started exploring R&B radio and the funk in 1980 was very disco-like. I converted over to R&B radio completely and, until 1985, funk continued to be uptempo, funky, fun, and danceable. When Shitney came on the scene and opened the doors for the dead asses, I got into house music which was nothing more than disco reincarnated. Even the rap of the 1980s was fast paced and danceable, just like disco was. It wasn't until house music went underground and rap took over that I got completely disgusted with music as a whole. By this time, rap was totally different than before. There was nothing disco-like about the rap of the 1990s. Rap songs stripped off most of the music and slowed the tempo way down. It wasn't until then, that disco really died because all the music before then had that disco tempo and danceable energy even if it wasn't officially known as "disco". When all the disco influence was finally gone, that's when I really started bitching and will continue to bitch. . . [Edited 8/22/06 6:53am] Andy is a four letter word.
