Seems like Wynton wants to play "jazz" while Miles & others of his mindset just wanted to play music.

...

Yup! I like Wynton's stuff, but it's funny, with all this "pure jazz" stuff, you'd think he was the oldest Marsalis brother, and not Branford....

...no, no... I guess now that I think about it, Branford does come off as older, at least in terms of musical perspective...like Miles and Herbie, he wants to play "all of it"...

....

yeah, wynton is kind of an enigma for me. i sort of agree in principal with a lot of what he has to about jazz and the state of music, but when he says it it sounds so pretentious and full of it. and, i heard some interview back in the 1980's where he said something along the lines of, he could out play miles any day, which totally turned me off to him for years.

also, his playing so frequently "looks good on paper", but leaves me cold.

however, i have seen him live several times, the first time back with art blakey and the jazz messengers, and then several times as leader of various incarnations of groups, and i definitely think he comes off better live than on record.

That reminds me of an interview he did with Ed Bradley.
I forget the exact question but it related to comments that his playing was rather stiff and mechanical .

Wynton appeared stunned momentarily then said something like, "Well, I just play."
And then proceeded to play some stiff and mechanical riffs. smile

Everything that I have heard by Miles is good.I have a pretty decent collection going and I am truly fascinated and inspired by Miles. Coltrane gets me for other reasons, but Miles is beyond real explanation. I am so fascinated with him and his music. The electric period ,right now, really grabs me. It is just so advanced. It is so left-field. I daily listen to 3 day-long jams by the man and try to memorize each little strangeness. There is just too much! But,just sit and listen to "calypso frelimo" or "x rated" or sooo many jams and understand that this was light years ahead of everything. And then,Miles' "employees" have all gone on and have been so incredible!!Man,if there is one musician I would have loved to spend a lot of time talking to and observing it's this guy.

Please, don't underestimate all the other periods of his work, either. Miles IS brilliant.Miles lives on every day. It's just that electric period has so much mystery and wonderment to it.

Also, get the dvd of Miles Electric. It is great. There is the live performance of "Call It Anything" and so much other info. He flat-out blows my mind!
