Maxwell ain't been on no drugs, what are you talking about?

He wanted to fit into the loverman leather pants, so his sack had no room to breathe, but boy did I did the album; even saw him in concert once, where I was the only white guy there. lol. Need my soul fix. He aint no Rahsaan, but he is better then ole boring D'Angelo.

His record company is probably rejecting all the new songs he wrote: "not commercial enough, try again," they probably said to him.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Good sex record. Good chill record. Max is great live too! I saw him at the Shrine a few years back. Solid.

imho, i dont think he has been the same since the embrya/dream hampton thang. this so-called music crtic took it upon herself 2 start a "beef" between m and d'angelo. she trashed embrya and said that m would NEVER be like D because D is the heir 2 prince's throne. m began 2 second guess himself as an artist, hence the reason why now sounds like a forced combination of embrya and uhs. he was trying 2 please people instead of follow his own muse.

I remember the article in question, and I found a link to it here. Personally, I thought she was on crack. No, let me take that back. The comparison thing was just bizarre. I came away with the impression that she had been fucking D'Angelo. Miles and Jordan?? Brown Sugar was cool and all, but anybody drawing those kinds of comparisons from just that album had to be fucking him.

D'Angelo boring? confused

...Have u been to one of his shows or just seen him on videos? The last time I saw D his show was high energy and anything but boring. He did a rock-n-roll thing with Devils Pie that was off tha chain.

that review messed him up something serious
that's coming from some reliable sources (tour mangagers, etc)

also, i4got 2 mention he had some family issues(deaths, etc) within the past 3-4 years also.

a friend of mine whose cousin was in the band for the NOW tour spoke on his issues and reasons 4 all of those cancellations as "going through some thangs".

i am not here 2 spread rumours or slander m's naem in any way. one person asked what has he been up to and i spread along what i heard.

ONCE AGAIN,all of it is "word on the street" stuff, in other words hearsay, nothing's been confirmed.

I consider this album to be the "I Want You" of our generation. It's certainly one of my favorite albums to be released in the 90's.

Excellent comparison. I never thought of it that way, but I'm digging it on several levels.

When the original post said UHS was "arguably THE most sensuous album ever," I just about broke my neck getting ready to type, "Have you ever heard I Want You?" lol

Anyway, UHS is the shit! Personally, I think it's the 2nd-best neo soul debut (after Brown Sugar). Either way, it's a five-star classic.

I heard he was coked out @ shows a few years back shrug I've never had the pleasure of seeing him live sad

Back to the album, simply a must have. Cut for mf'ing CUT, one of the strongest debuts EVER.

Embrya is really nice too but as I've said before it took some years to grow on me - I must have 5 or more songs from that album on various playlists now...

Now never did it for me - Lifetime is undeniable & I like Changed, or whatever #5 is called.

I'm always looking out for something new by him & I'd love to see him perform one day - he truly has one of the purest vocal's I've ever heard exclaim
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I definitely agree about what you said about Now! It was just something that was missing on that particular album, that wasn't missing on his previous albums. Now, in my opinion, was just a simple retread of Urban Hang Suite.

I never liked/understood Maxwell at the time, but over the past 5 years, I really began to dig his music.

The man really did release the "crown jewel" of the Neo-Soul, he released one of the better albums(regardless of genre) in the 1990's.

the same reason saul williams wrote what he wrote in the voodoo liner notes
we were entering the "beef" era.
prince's legacy caused this mess 4 these two.
i am not saying HE started it, but the critics and fans just had 2 place them in2 that oh so treacherous,"new prince" curse....i mean....category.

critics and fans still do that (bilal, van hunt, andre,or any other artist that might have been influenced by him).u had 2 have been under a rock 2 not have been influenced by him.this mofo ruled the 80's as far as musicianship. just like sly, james, stevie, and p-funk b4 him. maybe it was because i was young, i didnt c that much in regards 2 the comparisons 4 prince.

not just with prince, we all say so-and so is the next so and so.i dont think that is fair for the new kid on the block.

that's funny cuz my mom was the same exact way. When he came out she thought he was just this weird wanna be singer...then when I let her listen to my "Urban Hang Suite" album, that was all she wrote...she's been lovin' him ever since.

Ah yeah.

This was when moved 2 D.C. I 1st heard it in the South African embassy.

I also jammed and hung out with 2 of the cats on the album... The Bass player and Keyboard player. Freddie (keys) has been recording and touring with Meshell Ndegeocello 4 a while now, and was then.

Mike "Funky" Neal is one of the baddest, in-the-pocket Bass players I ever had the pleasure of hearing.

These guys, combined with Stu Mattheman, who wrote most of Sade's music, and Wah-wah Watson on guitar part-time, made this record gel... of course, Maxwell was (and hopefully still is) the BOMB.

Peace.

G.
