Madonna, Janet, Beyonce, Kylie, Britney, Ciara, Jessica, Xtina etc. etc....What really distinguishes one from the other?

well...i give janet and madonna credit for originality back in the day...but both have been really slacking of late...its time for them to close shop IMHO...

Beyoncé & Xtina can actually sing first of all and their styles are vastly different from each other. For example, Xtina is set on trying to prove herself as a "deep groundbreaking" artist, while Bee is commercial & gets joy simply out of entertaining. Madonna, Janet, Britney, & Ciara simply cannot sing. Madonna & Janet get a reward because they got by these last 20+ years on their gimmicks. Their also the most "creative" out of the bunch, moreso Madonna...Janet once was back when she was "great" & set the trends. Altho they don't possess any vocal prowess, they have been more creative with their vocal stylings at least(i.e. "You", "You Aint Right", etc). They of course paved the way for Britney & Ciara to be acceptable with their poor vocals & dancing skills. Britney is more choreographed & technical, Ciara's style of dancing is more urban & street. These are just some subtle differences between these pop divas. I tried though.

The differences are miniscule. They're all fruit from the same tree. Madonna, to her credit, has carved out an identity of her own, but her work is just as shallow. Janet actually is no different to what she was 20 years ago. The only difference is her team back then (Jam and Lewis, Rene Elizondo) were doing great work. I know her fans disagree, but even her performances are more the choreographer's work than hers .

Why can't there be a topic like "What truly distinguishe Aretha from the likes of Dionne Warwick, Glady's Knight, Randy Crawford, Roberta Flack"..and the list goes on.

Notice how you didn't mention Jessica? Jessica really had strong vocals but will through them away for the easy hit single. Also, her sound isn't defined at all (where Janet and Madonna kind of have signature sounds even though they expirment quite a bit). Jessica always goes for the easy hit. Notice how most of her recent singles have been covers, or near covers (I finally heard why everyone thinks "A Public Affair" sounds like "Holiday"...there is a sample in there).

BTW, a question like this is very similar to asking the difference between male artists. Notice there is no what's the difference between Justin and Usher threads...
