GUITAR PLAYERS WHO PLAYED BETTER WHEN THEY DID DRUGS

This topic isn't here to celebrate drugs,
but i was listening to clapton playing little wing live ,
from derek and the dominoes live album.

at that time he was into drugs and he played guitar much better
then after his drug period.
his playing was furios ,much diffrent then his latter blues rambling.like it's 2 diffrent guitar players.

santana said he had to learn to play guitar again after he stoped doing drugs.
his woodstock playing was much better then anything after that period, now he is stuck in routine.

what other players lost passion in their playing after being drug free?

John Frusciante. He played with such authority on the BloodSugarSexMagic record and then when he cleaned up and came back, he played like an 8 year old. No authority in the least! I dont' know if it was the drugs or what, but his playing has sucked since he rejoined the Chili Peppers.

I think that when you're on the drugs a lot of them were on, you aren't as conscious of what you're playing. you don't fall into ruts when you can't remember what you played. I feel like I tend to play more adventurously when I'm drunk (which sometimes means playing a D'Angelo song in a bar full of straight up rednecks) but I'm more sloppy. I guess you sometimes trade one thing for the other.

Shoot, John is playing better now than ever. He's killing it on the current tour. I heavily disagree with you on this one. John on drugs was actually not such a hot picture. See the Dutch TV interview from the mid 90s for a prime example (he plays two acoustic numbers for the interviewer). Talk about playing like an eight year old!!

As for the original question, I'll throw out there Joe Perry. That whole band actually needs to smoke a joint or two and listen to their output of the last 15-20 years. It might help, and couldn't hurt.

No Sonny T?
No Michael B?

I haven't heard him live, so it could be a different story. But on the records he sounds like a beginner. And especially after hearing how he played on BSSM, it was a shock hearing the stuff on Californication. I spose playing fucked up in the studio is diffferent than playing fucked up live. But he just sounded so much more authoritative then than he does now. (I do remember hearing about an interview he did where the interviewer came to his apartment and it was all messed up and filthy with used syringes all over the place!)

to set the record straight, his work on BSSM was BEFORE his heroin addiction.
Californication onwards was AFTER his heroin addiction. yes, there is quite a difference in his playing, but a lot of it is intentional. i have heard him play with as much precision as the BSSM days, but only when he wants to. he's more into simple figures now. i must say there are times when i think it is too simple, but he is one of those guitarists where you ALWAYS know it's him... and that is something not all players can attest to.

I don't know for sure, but there's a rumor Clapton faked having a drug addiction so he could develop a rock star image. Kinda like the "Clapton iz Gawd" thing. He's rumored to have started that himself.

confused to me, this just shows that these people just really aren't that great at guitar, i'd compare it to sports players with steriods, there just not as good unless thier on drugs. now i'm not trying to knock anybody's talents, but i guess i just find it sad.

I saw Santana in an interview where he stated that at Woodstock, he dropped so much acid that the neck of his guitar turned into a snake and kept moving, said he didn't know how he played the damn thing but some how he did. People said it was one of his best performances ever.(Infuckingcredible)

Mong

A lot of musicians use drugs as a means of shedding their shyness and inhibitions, btw.

Jimmy Page has to be the most erratic player ever. He can be great, and can be absolutely appalling.

Probably around '76 when his addiction became really apparent. He looked horrible during the '77 tour. disbelief And he was pretty sloppy on that one as well. sad
