Clover Hope,N.Y.
On Sept. 26,Natalie Cole will release her 20th studio album 'Leavin' (Verve),her first disc in nearly four years to feature new material. The 12-track set contains covers of songs by Neil Young,Fiona Apple,Kate Bush and Sting, among others.

Described as a blend of classic R&B,pop and rock,'Leavin' will be preceded by a hip-hop flavored remake of Aretha Franklin's 1972 hit "Day Dreaming".

"The album has given me the opportunity to explore the greatness in the songs of some of our most talented and gifted songwriters," says Cole."It was alot of fun to be able to put our spin on these songs and I thoroughly enjoyed interpreting them."

The title track is a Shelby Lynne cover, while other cuts include "Don't Say Goodnight",originally by the Isley Brothers,"Lovin' Arms" (Etta James) and the original track "5 Minutes Away",written by Cole,Dallas Austin and keyboardist Chanz Parkman.Cole will support the new offering with a theatre tour in the fall.

Love the cover. I actually heard Day Dreaming on the radio and thought maybe it was on an album I missed. I like it, tho.

It's not bad to do cover albums!

I like when an artists does a covers album...sometimes they twist and give a new dimension at the original tune. Tori Amos does excelent covers!

But sometimes it goes wrong...real wrong (coof...Duran...coof...Duran)

Well Natalie has often done covers, and you must admit, it did her back into popularity. Her remake of Pink Cadillac is still one of my favories. Unforgettable, etc etc. She's done well doing covers.

Yes she's done well but her originality can't be out already that she keeps doing cover albums

Yeah,I wonder the same thing.Chaka Khan's last CD was a covers album...Patti LaBelle's last CD was a covers album, and so on.I'm thrilled that these ladies are still recording and releasing new music, but it would be nice to have an entire album of newly written songs from them.My guess is that, the record labels are unwilling to take a chance on some of the Old School artists. They feel that the CD has a better chance if it's filled with classic songs that people already know. They look at the success of Rod Stewart, who's experiencing a career rebirth with his covers albums, and think "this is the way to go".

It's interesting that Natlalie would choose an Aretha song to cover. In the 70s,these ladies weren't exactly the best of friends. In her book,Aretha has some not-so-kind things to say about Natalie lol

One of the most interesting choices is "The More You Do It (The More I Like It Done",a mid-70s R&B hit for a singer named Ronnie Dyson. The song was written and produced by Marvin Yancy, who was also Natalie's producer and husband back then.

Yeah, i`ve heard about it, i haven`t read the book though.
In recent years, Aretha has said that she would love to see Natalie Cole play her in a movie about her life...
Imagine Natalie recording the songs for the soundtrack... drool I`m sure she still could sing like she did in the 70s, she can still do some "soul-shouting"

btw, i`m glad you`re back woot!

The fact that she does Shelby Lynne's 'Leavin'..is enough to pre-order this...that is one of the best songs of the past 10 years from one of the greatest albums of this decade...I AM SHELBY LYNNE...it's this generations..'Dusty In Memphis'.....

I don't listen to radio much--I usually flip around constantly when stuck in traffic but I've been hearing Natalie's Day Dreaming an awful lot.

Funny, I liked her when I was a kid, then didn't follow so much (I loathed Pink Cadillac) but when I look at my CDs I think I have every CD by her in the last 10 years or so and I didn't even realize it.

I have all of her CDs too but I have to admit,I was getting tired of the jazz stuff she's been doing recently. That's why I'm excited about this new CD.It's being labeled as a "return to R&B/pop" and that's good news. There's even talk of some club-ready remixes for "Daydreaming".

I know what you mean about the jazzy stuff. She's especially great to throw on when you're hosting for mature tasting crowd. I can't wait to hear Criminal.

I just responded in the other thread but I've only seen it on iTunes. I don't know if it's in stores yet. It's not on Amazon either.

You can listen to snippets on the Turntable at Verve. Not quite what I was expecting but Old Man, You Gotta Be, Don’t Say Goodnight sounded pretty good. Criminal sounds like a Vegas showtune. Not feeling it.
