Another ipod/itunes/mp3 question for dummies

ok ...this is probably common knowledge..so dont laugh.

Whats the best way to get my 1300+ songs on my itunes on my old computer to a new computer which I just purchased?

Im sure im not the first person whos bought a new computer whos had to do this. I think theres some software out there where you can upload your ipod to a computer.

Just curious if any orgers had to do this and whats the best way.

Thanks you all you kind souls in advance . smile

I recommend having all music files in an external unit.
That way if you have to format the PC or change to a new one like it's your case you just have to (re)install iTunes in the new PC and substitute these 2 files with the old ones:
iTunes Library.itl
iTunes Music Library.xml

The new iTunes will immediately recognize where the old files are and will let you synchronize your iPod.

That's the cheap way but there's also software that will do the trick and another slow method (manually extracting the files from the iPod and reimporting them all to the new iTunes. This ones takes hours with a 40GB iPod but I've tried it and works too)

I just got a program from Comp USA called tunesplus. Only $20 and it lets you take all the songs directly off of your ipod and put them on another computer. Really simple to use.

There are plenty of programs that let you do that for free.

if they are both macs, I think the OS will do it for you automatically if you connect the computers together with a firewire cable. There should be a prompt when you boot the new computer, otherwise go to /applications/utilities and run the migration assistant.
