JAZZ HEADS: DO U LIKE OLD/REAL JAZZ, CONTEMPORARY JAZZ OR BOTH?

For me, I don't like the newer stuff, especially the stuff that just remakes popular R&B songs like the remake of Janet's "Let's Wait Awhile" - I HATE that type of shit. I'm a Miles, 'Trane, Monk, Bird kinda guy. I like the old stuff. The stuff that gets into ya and makes you make that "ugly music face" ya know?

This "Easy Listening" or "Adult Contemporary" stuff pisses me off. I do like them at a Jazz Fest. Live music is always good to hear and that's the ONLY time I can tolerate it.

L.A. folk feel me when I say I love KLON and miss KKGO. I don't listen to The Wave, that's for pseudo-jazz fans. I need the REAL shit! wink

While I can't stand what they call "Smooth Jazz" these days, I do like all forms of Jazz, from ragtime, to swing to bebop and Post bop, right through to Fusion and beyond....acoustic/electric doesn't matter...I just don't like most of that latter day Kenny g-tailor made for radio stuff....

I've only been listening to instrumental jazz for about six months.

(before then, just singers like Ella, Billie, Armstrong, and some big bands).

My favorites have become John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. OMG eek . The vibe. The vibe.

Miles Davis ...I haven't warmed to him yet. neutral I have a compilation CD of Davis and nothing really sparks my spirit.

But even as a novice listener, I do know this: I HATE jazz pop.

You're referring to what I call...Snooze jazz. zzz

I wouldn't be so quick to write off the technique of covering Pop songs.
All the greats did it at some point (i.e. Coltrane - My Favorite Things)
It's just that today's approach and song arrangements are so lame compared to how they were handled in the past.

Although I wouldn't mind seeing the George Duke/Stanley Clarke set at the Long Beach "jazz" disbelief Festival next weekend, I wouldn't be able to make myself sit through the rest of that stuff.

I still follow the Jazz forms (straightahead, fusion, etc.) because that's where the musical players are.

KLON is now called KKJZ (88.1 FM)
KKGO (1260/540 AM) is currently alright for classic Jazz/Pop vocal tunes. But you've got to pick your spots in terms of the show lineups.

Maybe that's it, because I know the songs so much from my generation that I hate to hear them covered as a jazz rendition, ya know?

the older the better. i LOVE the standards love there are a few newer things i've heard that i don't mind. i also love hearing early recordings that have an old needle on the record player sound. drool

Both. I like the older clasics and some of the newer stuff as well. For GOOD new jazz, check out the "Urban Knights" series. I espicially like Urban Knights V.

Usually I prefer acoustic (older). Post-bop and a lot of avant-garde stuff, but I am a huge fusion geek (figure pre-1985). Most smooth stuff I don't bother with and have low opinions of those who claim it's jazz.

I've got SIRIUS and buttons #1 & 2 are keyed on

70 | PLANET JAZZ
CONTEMPORARY JAZZ
Modern jazz and fusion

and

72 | PURE JAZZ
CLASSIC JAZZ
The classic sounds and styles of jazz masters, past and present.

There's other outlets for SMOOTH CONTEMPORARY and NEW AGE, but that stuff doesn't interest me.

My grandfather weaned me on Duke and Bird. I discovered 'Trane, Miles and Monk on my own. Over 15 years, I land firmly on the side of "hard bop."

"Fusion" is enjoyable but it's not my preferred style of "jazz." Madhouse, Stanley Jordan, Roy Hargrove, et al. I enjoy.

But it annoys me that most so-called "jazz" outlets and listeners know nothing of bop or big band. George Duke, Gerald Albright, Chris Botti et al. have their place. But they're worlds away from the innovators, past, present and future.

I have my preferences, but I resist the temptation (most of the time) to declare "fusion" as "not" being jazz.

hmm What about 'em?...

...Played in many of them.

Some of the best crowds to play for if you're putting down real Blues and R&B.
I loved the people cause they didn't front. They just came to have a good time.
Check out Bobby Rush's segment on the Martin Scorsese "Blues" documentary.

Vainandy'll tell you. cool

although i'm not too familiar with a lot of jazz artists, i like the old jazz the best. i'm a big ella, coltrane, and louis armstrong fan. i especially like when ella swings and i love her collabos with armstrong. ella's voice and the way she can keep up with whatever tempo thrown at her absolutely amazes me.

I don't like that watered down popish jazz either. I like the real stuff, the old stuff, like Wes Montgomery, The Jazz Quartet, Nancy Wilson and so on.

I don't have a Sirius unit in the car yet but my Dish Network system includes the music channels.
Those 2 stations get dialed up a great deal.

my fav stuff is acoustic jazz circa 1951-1965. when you say "contemparary jazz" i assume you to mean the pop jazz/smooth jazz that folks have been referring to. mosy of this leaves me cold, but occasionally, i'll hear a performance that grabs me, but it is rare.

there are, howver, a lot of "contemporary" artists doing jazz that i like.
folks like:
vincent herring
roy hargrove
wallace roney
terell stafford
chris potter
stefano di battista
mark turner.

( Although "The Groove" sounds a lil' Shakatak-ish ,
the actual album opens with a great textured & orchestrated piece called "Felix Leo" )

So that's a small portion above and below of artists which pop-up now .
When growing up i heard around my house compositions from cats like Miles , Trane , Adderly , Bird , Dizzy , Clifford Browne and some Westcoast-cats like Gerry Muligan , Stan Getz and my pops all-time hero , Chet Baker .
And we had some bossa-jazz in the house from Antonio Carlos Jobim , Joao Gilberto and Sergio Mendes .
My mom was jazz-dancer in her freetime and brought one day "The Dude" from Q to our home . She was preparing a choreography "for "Just Once"
That album was my first encounter with a colaboration of many great artists and had me examine lots of sleeves in the future .
The Dude is memorised in my mind 4ever , cause my pops used to play a mixed tape with other tracks from other acts in car-trips to family-relatives or on holidays .
Anyway , not really straight-ahead jazz but it was my start for directing to the more jazz-funk area or artists playing complex compositions with an underlying funk-roots , like the artists below expressed .
