the gates open around 11:30am or so, but you don't have to be there right when it starts. it's basically just a big festival. the chili peppers go on i think around 8 or 8:30 tomorrow night.

go to www.lollapalooza.com to check the schedule of who all's playing tomorrow...

Thanx Anx ~ what a great read and the pictures are fabulous!!!! I want to see the artist cards, please???? I LOVE that kinda thing.

thanks...i'm glad you enjoyed!

as for the cards, you can see every card she designed here:

http://www.katzinn.com/cardindex.htm

it's kind of naive line art, but that's exactly why i like it. it's kinda psychadelic and gentle at the same time. not usually my cuppa tea, but i liked her work for some reason. plus i talked to her, and she's very sweet.

and i love custom designed playing/tarot cards too! one day i'll make another deck of my own and have them printed. nod

great photos from day 2!

I'm uber jealous of The Go! Team. I literally found out about them the day AFTER they were in MPLS. A local DJ was going on about the show so I bought the album and immediately kicked myself for missing them live.

okay i'm not much of a writer as anx so here goes. anx gave me his wristband, which was most gracious of him. i took my boys with me (my sis is a hater and she wouldn't babysit for me for the 2 hours i want to see red hot chilli peppers btw rolleyes), they all got in free! we got there at about 6 so we listened to a little bit of house music a dj was playing and we walked around a little. my sons got a kick outta some of the drunks. we didn't go to the kids section 'cause we couldnt find it. they were getting kinda tired 'till it was time for the chili peppers to come on. i could've went up front but i didn't want to have my kids in a position where we could get hurt or something 'cause there were so many people. honestly most of the songs they played i did not know but they were really good and funky, the boys were really into it. i hoping they'd at least play 'soul to squeeze' or 'suck my kiss'. i know those are old but i really wanted to hear them. flea was fine as hell with his tatoos as always drool, he played the shit outta that base wink, the kids loved it. i had to take turns picking them up nuts, it started to get really hot even though it was dark and almost 9:30. we decided to leave before they finished their set 'cause i didn't want to deal with trying to pull my boys through the crowd even though they wanted to stay. but thanks Anx! i got to see the peppers and i really enjoyed it, and now i can get some peace tonight 'cause the boys are all tired out lol

p.s. so am i right in thinking this will be every year in chicago from now on? i hope so. i can be more prepared. sorry no pics i didn't have a camera and i don't have one on my phone. but i remember flea's hotness love oh wait they did play some i liked! it was 'californication' and 'scar tissue' nuts.

woot! i'm glad you got the boys in and everyone had a good time!

what were the chili peppers wearing? hopefully they weren't wearing those big dumb lightbulb helmets again.

and yeah, lollapalooza's gonna be a yearly thing. every spring they sell advance three-day tix for really cheap, but you don't know who's playing so it's kind of a gamble. i guess it's worth it just to check out some of the lesser known bands, if nothing else. i'll most likely go again next year.

woot! great reviews and edumacational (I didn't know "It Aint Easy" was a cover.) A few weeks ago, I saw ago SY open for Pearl Jam and they blew me away. It was my first live SY experience and I was around when DN came out. boxed Anyhoo, I though the Pavement bassist worked well with the band.

Assuming your tolerance for festivals is waning like mine is, and given the heat, I can totally understand not staying for Ween.....but, dude, that would have been a hard decision for me. I absolutely LOVE that band live.

they didnt have on anything outrageous, of course anthony didn't have on a shirt and flea had on something that looked like a multicolored vest and some shorts with tatoos all over his arms. i couldn't see chad that well and john looked kinda ac/dcish with the long hair white shirt and black jacket with shorts but no tie. i must say that john and flea were really really good on bass and guitar. their solos really made the songs pop out.

thurston is very fun - he has a tendency to be a bit of a comedian between songs, i've noticed. they seem like they're still having fun after all these years, except for maybe kim. i love her madly, but damn - does that woman ever smile!?

Cool Reports!

I caught the webcast of Sparta's Lollapalooza peformance on Sunday afternoon. They did not offer a good enough view of the crowd so I don't know if the Chicago audience actually dug them or not but their performance was fierce, at least from my little mac...

Sparta is from my hometown of El Paso, TX and one of the members is a dear friend. Two years ago I got to meet Susie Katayama while she orchestrated some of Sparta's recordings at Sunset Sound here in Los Angeles. I had a nice long chat with her about Prince and she was kind of freaked that I knew who she was...

eek (OMG Anx is asking me a question. I'm so honored!)

I don't know if you're familiar with the band AT THE DRIVE-IN, but after they broke up, the remaining members formed two bands, The Mars Volta and Sparta...so basically their sound is very "emo." In fact, At the Drive-In was one of the first emo bands out there...

Sparta has a new album coming out in October and I was fortunate, again, to hang out during some of the recordings and this time around I met a woman named Mary Clayton. She's the woman who sang back up voice on the song "Gimme Shelter" for the Rolling Stones. She sang backup for a stunning new song that, I believe, will be the opening track on the new album.

Cool...I'm not overly familiar with ATDI, but I do have that anthology thing that came out last year and I enjoy it quite a lot. I'll make a point of checking out Sparta.

Mary Clayton is the voice on my favorite Stones song, "Gimme Shelter." The recorded it in one take, so the way the story goes when Mick told it.

I was kinda "eh" about seeing the eels...they've always been a favorite of mine, but I didn't like their last album so much and I really wasn't sure if I was in the mood to hear E and the boys moan through a bunch of their maudlin classics.

I'm glad I stuck it out because they RAWKED. nod

First off, they re-arranged their songs for the stage basically by speeding them up and turning them all into what sounded like bluesy Ramones songs. Secondly, they wore funny costumes and had a crazy bald guy in a security t-shirt and a big walrus moustache do nutty stuff throughout the show. Thirdly, they did some way fun covers including "I Put A Spell On You", "That's Life" and (OH. MY. GOD.) "ROCK SHOW" by PEACHES!!!! omfg

(apologies to the orger who was the victim of my doing the good ol' hold the cellphone to the stage trick during the peaches cover, ahem)

I'll never doubt eels again. They were the highlight of my day. And the goofy security guy (Crazy Al, that is) went from standing still and being intimidating to doing karate moves to feeding the audience whipped cream from a can (don't ask) to actually playing a guitar solo and doing a damn good job at it! There was nothing Crazy Al could not do.

Here are some pics from the eels' set:

and my favorite pic, taken via the video screen:

After the eels rocked my ass off and served it in a salad, I limped off to the dining vendors for a nibble of overpriced lunch, and found a vegetarian joint that served a weirdo burrito which involved sweet potatoes. ill

I remember telling you (but you never listen to me neutral ) a long time ago that you should NEVER doubt eels!!!! E is about the most versatile songwriters/performers around, he can do almost everything! His shows are always entertaining and his band always changes with excellent musicians!
Great to see E looking weird again with the beard and the goggles (very Ted Kazinsky-like!), and the security-dude..... falloff

i've only seen them twice and both times they blew me away. kim's weirding me out, though. i love her voice and the creepy/daffy vibe she brings to the band, but she just kinda seemed like she didn't want to be there both times i saw them play. the first time i saw them, she hardly even sang (but at least she did 'kool thing', which made me happy). this time, she sang a LOT, but she had a back-up bass player. i mean, god bless her for sticking it out, but watching thurston totally ripping it up and having a great time, it's weird to see kim so reserved. i dunno. maybe that's her schtick. love her either way. nod

i just read elsewhere that sparta is a "group to watch". who knew? okay, i'll watch for them from here on out! very cool that mary clayton is singing with them. i love it when really established older musicians work with younger, kinda obscure-ish and edgy artists. the results are always so interesting. have you heard ronnie spector's latest album? it's a bit like that. pretty fabulous stuff.
