What you've all been asking for! Rhino releases the 'GOTHIC BOX'

From Billboard.com:

'Gothic Box' Shines Light On Ultra Dark Music

July 18, 2006, 11:25 AM ET
By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Rhino has rounded up the top names in goth rock for the four-disc boxed set "A Life Less Lived -- The Gothic Box," due Sept. 19. Despite loathing the titular term that came to describe their music, bands like Joy Division, the Cure, Bauhaus and the Jesus & Mary Chain transcended labeling to revolutionize rock in the late '70s and early '80s.

Key tracks from those bands are featured on "A Life Less Lived," including opener "Dead Souls" by Joy Division and Bauhaus' "She's in Parties." Other acts represented throughout include the Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Love And Rockets, the Mission (U.K.), the Chameleons, the Damned, Skinny Puppy and AFI.

The fourth disc in the box is a DVD with such evergreen videos as Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead," the Cure's "Lullaby," Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon," a live version of the Cult's "Spiritwalker" and Love And Rockets' "Ball of Confusion."

there's some good stuff on here and some wack stuff, too. "ball of confusion" - goth? that's silly. don't get me wrong, i ADORE love and rockets, but they've done gothier stuff than that. and L&R isn't really a goth band to begin with...i think they started that band after bauhaus to get rid of the goth label and go in a more classic rock direction. shrug

and the nick cave selection...come ON. what about "up jumped the devil"? that song gives me nightmares.

About half the bands on this box I wouldn't consider real goth. It's more of goth-friendly box as opposed to a comp of true gothic rock. If you went to a concert for any one of the bands featured, you're bound to find at least a few goths in the audience.

I'll still buy it. Gotta support the cause.

true nuff. i guess i'm so close to some of the stuff, like love & rockets, peter murphy and nick cave, that i don't even categorize it anymore, even though i got interested in all three during my goth daze...

Throw Love And Rockets or Peter Murphy on in a goth club and you will get a packed dancefloor. nod

Those bands and others like Joy Division and the Banshees are bigger than goth. To define them as such is too limiting and doing said bands a disservice.

If we were in high school, we would call the efforts behind this box and the people who buy it "posers." How sad is it when your favorites, including things you already have in your collection (from the beginning) turn up on a definitive collection...

I am depressed by this actually.

if this compilation were put out when i was in high school, they would have put wack stuff like t'pau and jane child on it. lol

i guess if you're a baby goth and all you know is the stuff you can find at the mall, this is a good history lesson and hopefully an intro to some of the essential goth goodness. it just isn't acceptable for a 16-year-old boy to wear eyeliner and not know who siouxsie or bauhaus is. no no no!

I think that is stretching the boundaries a little too much.

AFI are goth?

They've been labeled goth-punks for years now.

We could go on and on about what should have been included. No All About Eve is a major oversight I think--while some artists are represented multiple times (Banshees/Creatures, Southern Death Cult/Death Cult/Cult, Tones On Tail/Love And Rockets/Daniel Ash, etc.).

Definitely agree. Even Dali's Car is included which totally isn't necessary. Why not have The Bubblemen too and go for a clean sweep?

Seems an okay collection. I have an abbreviated 2-disk version called Nocturnal - there are plenty of compilations like this out there if you look.

I love how people argue over goth - I love how goths argue with other goths about not being goth enough! To me, the term 'goth' is a broad term that can be inclusive of many bands, styles and people. Goth is whatever you think is goth, any music on the alternative dark side even if the actual band isn't all that goth, anybody wearing mostly black or white but not too many colours. I once read a comment in some magazine that goth was a movement that was big for 5 minutes in 1985! Certainly many hold to the original goth movement that came out of a collision of Punk and New Romantics and all those early bands. The fact is gothdom is rediscovered and reinvented and added to every new generation, and I love that. People dissatisfied with the 'normal' pop culture and expressing their individuality - strangely by wearing essentially a uniform, but at least one that can be accessorized!

There are bands that try to be goth on purpose, their are bands that refuse to be labelled goth even when everyone else considers them so. I'm a big fan of the Sisters Of Mercy, funny thing is a lot of the fans refuse to accept they are goth, they say they are a rock band, and they refuse to mention Wayne Hussey or The Mission by name in much the same way as the Scottish play and Tony M around here!

I love that goth bands had a real identity and real careers that kept going - I've heard The Fields Of The Nephilim were touring a while back, I recently saw The Sisters Of Mercy again and they were fantastic. Amazing when you think that most of the originators weren't really that musically gifted, but just great at creating atmosphere.

"Goth is whatever you want it to be" as Prince once almost sang.

blahblah it's just a silly compilation blah.

now, I'm SHOCKED and HAPPY that they included Flesh For Lulu. But, "I Go Crazy"? They shoulda pulled something from their first album or something when the band was much, much darker.

but whatevs, it's nice to know someone else remembers this band biggrin
