Man I just bought Arrested Developments .... Latest (2003, 2005, and a live record) and Speeches two Solo records, (yes Tenesee, Mr.Wendell arrested development) cause they were on sale at the local mom and pop wrecka stow 5 for 15 bucks. I swooped em up! Man I haven't heard the whole thing but the parts of each record I've listened to have been bangin. These guys are true hip hop originators, and Speech is an underrated M.C.! I suggest if you can find these records or download em do it! Off the chain. Too bad these guys aren't still as popular as their Tenesee heyday, and they sound better live then on record (at least on the live and raw record) I wanna go see em live. and don't get me started on Speeches solo stuff, he has two songs Braided Hair and Gone Away that are just all that and a can of Pringles. His album is called vagabond! Carpenters bend wood, fletchers bend arrows, wise men fashion themselves.

Yes they would, but speech is already married, the only reason I know this is cause he asks his wife and kid to join him on stage during the live arrested development record and sings there praises! Carpenters bend wood, fletchers bend arrows, wise men fashion themselves.

The problem with Arrested Devlopment was that - despite a very good first LP and a classic first single - they went to such extraordinary lengths to distance themselves from anyone that might constitute a solid fanbase for themselves...their vibe was "We are unconventionally-dressed-just-for-the-sake-of-being-unconventional petit-bourgeois-intelligentsia-wannabe anti-gangster rap anti-ageism Southern afrocentric hippies who don't eat meat or wash our hair...we are the light and the way...follow us!" Not surprisingly, nobody did. They had a nice little run in 1992, then Dre dropped the Chronic, and that was all she wrote for Arrested Development. C'ya! | |

I think what you're saying is you didn't necessarily dig their entire style and may have felt alienated by their level of militant dedication to their lifestyle. But one of the things I've always adored and respected about Arrested Development is that their style was not a "look" or a fashion, but truly a lifestyle. They lived it and still do. They didn't rap about respecting Mother Earth and the ancestors, then turn around and eat a Big Mac and throw the wrapper on the ground. They didn't sing about being non-materialistic while wearing designer clothes. The term "keeping it real" has been co-opted by people who do anything but. [Edited 8/4/06 9:08am] Yes, you both are correct. I made it sound contrived, and I don't think it was contrived at all. I should have edited my post more thoroughly! I don't dislike AD...their first LP is incredible...I saw them in 1991 or maybe very early 1992 at the old Music Machine on Pico in LA just before the first album dropped...they were great...But I do think what they put across to people, especially after the first album, was too sectarian and exclusive. They DO come with the holier-than-thou thing. They became more this way as time went on. Too each his or her own, I don't mind, I just attribute that to being why they fell off so quickly. | |

i think their biggest problem is forgetting where they came from.
