Electronica-Jazz/Funk (Downtempo, Chill, Broken, etc.) ...
I always ask this question here every once in awhile, but anyody else into any Electronica-jazz - or whatever you wanna call it : Downtempo, nu-jazz, chill, broken-beat, acid-jazz (I'm not sure what all these names even mean anymore, Lol!)-- stuff like 4hero, Jazzanova, Vikter Duplaix, Clara Hill, Hefner, Koop, Ig Cultue/New Sector Movements, King Britt, atjazz, Quintessence, Nicolay Photek, Ian O'Brien, Tek 9, etc, etc. -- the kind of electronica that's influenced By the funk-jazz fusion of Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, and artists like Leon Ware, Minnie Riperton, Charles Stepney, Patrice Rushen and The Mizzell Brothers, and Weather Report, as well as soundmeisters like the late Jay Dee (Dilla)....this breed seems to be an interesting combination of multi-instrumentalists, Djs and studio rat gurus like Gilles Peterson. anybody else got some favorites?

 Of all the genres this is the one I listen to the most over the last few years. I can listen to it all day, everyday, at work, driving, exercise, relaxing...
I think it was you who put me on to Clara Hill a while back. Bought Restless and never looked back. I play it regularly and I anxioiusly await her next release. Ive also been digging: 4Hero Jazzanova Nuspirit Helsinki Aya, Gaelle and Aquanote have some nice tracks Royksopp - Melody A.M., The Understanding Vikter Duplaix Lisa Shaw I have a compilation of all her songs along with Cherry I never get tired of Beautiful Tomorrow Cirque du Soleil - Solarium/Delirium Caia - The Magic Dragon Cisco House Presents Compact Vinyl Ilya - They Died for Beauty Underworld Jazzanova Latrice*s Illuminate leans a little toward Dance but I like I have some King Britt and I stumbled across this classical piece by Steve Reich that reminds me a little of Underworld. I think I step outside the genre with Groove Collective and Down to the Bone but dig them too. Now I know who to check out when Im looking for something new. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off | |

I think that's one of the Kool things about this "genre" now, the lines are blurred...for example, a lot of Dwele's stuff especially from his Rize era) could fit right in with this, but is that R&B? Neo-soul? jazz-funk? When Hefner was playing live afew years ago, it was a full live band, with Hefner (Lee Jones) on keybords...is that still "downtempo"? Frank McComb's collaboration the New Sector Movements tune, "The Sun", could have come off of a Stevie Wonder album, circa '73 .....or "Master Plan", Donnie's collaboration with Ig Culture(on "The Colored Section"), is that neo-soul? Funk? Broken Beat? Does it even matter? I hope not.... the fact that the Steve Reich piece sounds like Underworld makes that another great example! ... I don't even like to use genre titles anymore because I find a lot of the music I enjoy doesn't fall under a particular label. I also don't like being pigeon-holed by my preferences. Music is so encompassing trying to separte it into tidy little boxes doesn't realy work for me.
If it works with the atmosphere or mood I'm trying to create then it gets added to the playlist which often winds up as a potpourri if artists. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off | |

and don't be afraid of a little aphex twin. sure you'll have to shift through some coarse and headache spawning beats to get to the precious ones, but that's what makes it wonderful.  | |

Soup by Bola is something worth digging for. i don't know if it's still available but shouldn't be that difficult to find somewhere online. i only have this on vinyl and something i should be adding to my cyber files real soon. | |

this is another one i've recommended several times. it's a comp compiled by Zero 7 (who is another group you should check out whenever you get a chance, if you don't know them by now that is  ) anyways, the sound of the album is a combination of hip/trip-hop, jazz, funk, folk, bossa nova, and with a dash of neo-soul. | |

If you're looking for some great downtempo electronica/trip-hop, one artist I recommend highly is Jay-Jay Johanson out of Sweden. He's been making albums since the late '90s and he's releasing a new album this fall. The title of his upcoming disc is "THE LONG TERM PHYSICAL EFFECTS ARE NOT YET KNOWN" -- it will be released this October. I have a favorite. 
He goes by several alliases though, partly because he's so freakishly talented he can't conatin himself on one project!!! You might know him as DJ XanX, Fuzzpod, or look at the ambi-sonic.com site for sound samples. I highly recommend Sound Capsule. Oh, and you might know him from around here as superspaceboy....  | |
