If I remember correctly, Arsenio did not allow any lip-synching on his program. He let some artists have pre-recorded backing tracks, since he had hip-hop and dance artists on his show, but every musical performer had to sing or rap live. What was really groundbreaking at the time was that Arsenio was the first late night TV talk show host to have hip-hop, metal, alternative and dance/techno acts regularly appear on his program. Johnny Carson always had older musical artists on the Tonight Show at that time, and while David Letterman had a few rock acts performing on his show, the acts themselves tended more towards classic rock and soul/R&B. When Jay Leno took over the Tonight Show after Johnny Carson retired, he basically took over Arsenio's musical set list and put it on his show. | |
