Donny Hathaway was the spankin' TRUTH!!! Every now and then, I break ou "A Donny Hathawy Collection."
I don't think I've heard any male singer do it like DH did. I listen to his daugher Lalah's stuff all the time. But, dang, if Donny didn't put it down like nobody's business. "Giving Up" will make you think about your stuff, for sure. Just had to get that out of my system.

I was a kinda young when his star was on the rise, however, his music was part of the soundtract of my life at the time. His duets with Roberta Flack are timeless. From You are My Heaven, Where is the Love, The Closer I get to You, and Back Together Again to me are just as fresh today as the day they were released.
His voice is classic and his ballads to me show his true sprit and depth he was blessed with. You Were Meant For Me, For All We Know, and A Song For You stand as just a few examples of his most beautiful ballads. He left this life way too soon. God rest his soul in eternal peace.

I have yet to hear someone with his vocal tone - it's like molasses. He could sing the ingredients on a ketchup bottle and it would sound great. Only his daughter comes close. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

Oh YES, you should! The band's tight, the songs are great and it has the prefect level of audience noise IMO. The male/female choir on The Ghetto is to die for.

It's a shame that the "Love, Love, Love" anthology never came out; I understand that it was something to do with Roberta Flack. Quite a few of the tracks made it on to the "These Songs For You, Live!" compilation, albeit in edited form. I have a promo with the full length versions, as well as other unreleased live tracks.
Rhino do seem to be releasing unreleased Donny stuff on various artist compilations though. There's a compilation called "You Better Believe It" (I think) which has a monitor mix of "Love, Love, Love" and a recent "Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Brothers" release has Donny doing his version of "What A Woman Really Means" which is sublime. Shame that there's never been a biography written about him; he's my favourite vocalist by far, with so much emotional resonance within his voice. You're right about Lalah too.

Yes Donny was the truth. Everything Is Everything, Live and Extension of a Man are three of my all time favorite records. Extension of a Man gets me everytime though. I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry Pts. 1&2, Flying Easy, Valdez in the Country and I Love You More Than You'll Every Know are pure ecstasy. [Edited 7/27/06 22:08pm]

People need to read about the man behind the music and the forces that drove him into delievering such work of art. No more myths and no more assumptions, just the REAL DEAL. I read once that comedian Anthony Anderson had signed to portray the role of DH. Not sure how true is this. Donny was a troubled man, he was haunted down by the same beast that shot Phyllis Hyman; self-depression. Both were very inscure and hyper-sensitive. Most sadly was the fact that they thought that nobody loved them and even disbelieved it, when in fact, alot of people dearly loved them.
