Not a song list guy so I scored a list from one of their respective fan sites.

Michael McDonald:

It Keeps You Runnin’
Sweet Freedom (Band Introductions)
I Keep Forgettin’
Stop, Look and Listen
That’s the Way God Planned It (tribute to Billy Preston)
Ain’t No Love to be Found
I Heard it Through the Grapevine
Second That Emotion (may have been dropped from last night's set)
You Belong to Me (i'm thinking this was earlier in the set)
Minute by Minute
What a Fool Believes
Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing
Takin’ It to the Streets

My son and I got there toward the end of I Keep Forgettin' as the traffic was more oppressive than I anticipated.

After What a Fool Believes, out comes an 8-piece Soul/Gospel vocal choir complete with Choir Master.
They stay for the remainder of the set and this thing has just gone to church.
At the end of Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing, Michael goes into an extended gospel flavored solo on keys.
This goes on for about 30-40 seconds before he drops into the signature intro chords for Takin' It to the Streets.
Crowd goes wild. The choir takes it to another level.
At that point, if he had ushers in the aisles with collection plates, he could've cleaned up.

No encore as the stage had to be prepped.

I've gotta give it up for Groove Mistress...

...Yvette "Baby Girl" Preyer who didn't let up once.

Steely Dan (and the aptly titled Crack 10-piece Band):

*Note to Byron: As you can see in the foreground, DF had a can of Coke on his Rhodes secured within a roll of R&R tape.

Turtle Talk (a Stan Kenton instrumental chart)
Bodhisattva
Time Out Of Mind
Aja
I Got The News
Hey Nineteen
Cousin Dupree
Josie
Green Earrings
Black Friday
Dirty Work

Funk Groove (band Intros and MM joins)
Show Biz Kids
Do It Again
Peg
Don't Take Me Alive
Kid Charlemagne

ENCORE
My Old School

Donald Fagen is not a great singer but his voice is perfect as the quirky persona he and Walter Becker have concocted and whose perspective they write through. The character that's smarter than the beautiful-people/well-heeled crowd or beautiful but flawed females he manages to run with. During moments on the outside, he chronicles their strange and outrageous behavior.

Outside of some early mix problems, Donald's fluffing the 1st line to Hey 19 and his keytar...

...going on the fritz, the show was perfect.

With the exception of Pretzel Logic, the set consisted of representatives from the first 7 studio albums. Oddly enough, Cousin Dupree making the cut as a last minute addition ("We haven't played that one in a long time..."), was the only selection from their last 2 albums. Aja (4) topped the list followed by The Royal Scam (3), Countdown to Ecstasy (3), Gaucho (2), Can't Buy A Thrill (2) and Katy Lied (1).

Starting the set with the Kenton tune was a nice touch and showed off the slick 4-piece horn section.
Becker/Fagen came on stage during the Bodhisattva intro and were given an enthusiastic welcome.

By the time they got to Aja the mix problems had been ironed out.
I said to myself here's where the rubber meets the road for drummer Keith Carlock.
Having become partial to Ricky Lawson, Carlock's drumming on EMG sounded timid to me.
But knowing Becker & Fagen's penchant for the Frankensteinization of drum tracks, I let it pass.
Based on his running of the show and his treatment of Aja, he's anything but timid.
Not a stick-clicker, he counted off every tune in full voice so there's was no mistaking starts and tempos.
(It sounded as if he was counting off I Saw Her Standing There a few times)

The set rolled along from one classic to the next.
Then it was explained the the female background vocalists (Carolyn Leonhart & Cindy Mizelle) would be handling Dirty Work.
The tune was updated with a few hipper chords and a moodier arrangement.
Perfect for the ladies.

It was decided that it was "Time for some Funk" and the band launched into an official JB groove complete with horn-rippin' change/bridge that brought things back to the one. Band intros were handled during this groove along with the reintroduction of Michael McDonald who would finish their set on keys and vocals. This groove was also used as the foundation for Show Biz Kids.

Fagen announced that Do It Again would be performed using the '74 arrangement they had when Michael was in the band.
A few extra chords added more interest to the melody than the traditional vamp/chorus structure of the song.
During Peg I thought to myself, I wonder if Michael is thinking "Damn i'm glad I only have to sing 1 of these parts this time."

After Kid Charlemagne, they gave the obligatory good nights.
However having peeped the setlist yesterday, I knew there had been a 2 song encore during the recent shows.
The adult in me kicked in and my son and I started heading towards the exit to minimize the mayhem in the parking lot.

On our way out we heard them kick into My Old School with the crowd wildly singing along.
By the time we reached the car, they were into FM.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I enjoy well written/performed Pop music as much as I do Jazz.
So it was a pleasure to see, what some might term, "old geezers" just get on stage behind their instruments/mics and without the use of profanity (well, not counting the chorus in Show Biz Kids), "audio assistance", sequencers, oppressive volume, goofy stage props or pyrotechnics, just kick ass the Old School way.

Both bands were total professionals and this was one of the few shows where my ears weren't ringing afterwards.

Maybe more if I think of something.

But still, I kind of wish I was going to see the Dan, since I saw Al last summer and I have never seen SD. I checked ticket availability a few days ago and there were great seats available if you only want to buy a single.

Thanks for the review tA.

In absentia, so I popped in a bootleg from 96. Fagen's vocals have always been annoying; even more so live. I hope they had the femme bkgrnd singers to smooth things out. They skipped "Aja" on my bootleg and that just ain't right! sad

Wondered if they'd slip Mike back in for some numbers. That sounded like a good time, but expensive and too much traffic for a mid-week nite out.

Funny, on my bootleg I hear a metronome "tick tick tick tick..." in between tracks. They're very precise, eh?

Yeah, when you add in t-shirts for the family a few coins got dropped.
I'm very selective on who i'll spend my show dollar on so I don't go to many.
SD was a show I was not going to miss.

If I wasn't out of town at the time, i'd have caught the Donald Fagen solo tour when they came through.

Just couldn't take a chance on missing them and then finding out that this was it.
