So I listened to this shit for the first time today.....

Okay, I swear it was something Tom Hanks cooked up while dancing on that giant keyboard in Big back in '88. Why bother hiring a producer?

Now as for Cassie, girlfriend was hyped as having a voice. But she winds up sounding like an overprocessed Ashanti clone. There is no emotion there. It's a robot talking about how she wants to fuck you. She just blends into the background and leaves no impression. She is the wallpaper in my dentist's bathroom.

I sure as fuck do miss Aaliyah, because maybe we wouldn't have all these no-singing, no-charisma one-name "sexy" broads that are being foisted on us - Cassie, Rihanna, Ciara, I'm looking at you. You are all the same person. The Raelians were successful.

True.

And Janet is to blame for starting the whole brand. sad
tho' I battled blind
love is a fate resigned
memories mar my mind
love it is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame
Love is a losing game

...it wouldn't really surprise me if a Rihanna or Ciara ended up going to the same route, with the same level of popularity in 2 or 3 years. In the end, they're all being marketed to the same crowd.

Do you REALLY believe this? If you do, you are sadly mistaken. Rihanna can't sing and Ciara pants through her songs while dancing. Christina Milian has more vocal skills than these two put together and she isn't even anywhere close to where Aalyiah was. You underestimate Aalyiah's gifts. All these chicks have major flaws that Aalyiah didn't have that will keep them from filling her spot. Like I said earlier, the only one who in my opinion is on that pathway is Amerie.

It's not a question of talent, my friend. It's a question of what the public will gobble up and accept as a representation of talent. Not having vocal skills never hampered Britney Spears from becoming a huge star. And ultimately, if Rihanna and Ciara are properly marketed they, too, could see huge success. I'm not guaranteeing it, but it wouldn't surprise me to see it happen.

Okay, now you're tripping. Aalyiah was never marketed as a sex object. Of course she was a pretty CARMEL-COLORED girl (not really "light-skinned) so they would use her looks to help sell her image as is done with 98.5 percent of the artists on the market. She did not rely "heavily" on sex appeal. Her last CD was miles ahead of her contemporaries at the time in terms of structure and maturity. Its obvious that Timbaland was saving some of his better tracks for Aalyiah. She had a pleasant voice. She wasn't an "extreme" vocalist. Most of her songs were uptempo & mid-tempo jams to dance at the club to. The charm that you are failing to see that so many others have was that Aaliyah was a relatively "safe" artist. She was stylish and fairly graceful and not slutting herself out ala Britney Spears "f**k-me-before-daddy-gets-home" miniskirts and such. She was starting to act more and was basically being groomed to be a media darling. They've been trying to make another Aalyiah ever since she passed and have pretty much failed. The closet that's come to her is Amerie but she's not acting yet and doesn't have the presence Aaliyah had. Aalyiah had mastered being subtle and yet still sexy. Oh, and she could dance more than "a little". If Aalyiah wasn't a good dancer, what female artist do you think is?

No, you're tripping. Check again. I said I wouldn't say she relied heavily on sex appeal.

As far as her dancing and voice go, most of what I saw from Aaliyah was choreographed. As it tends to be with the majority of artists like her. But it's not like she was gonna make you forget about Janet or anything. Her voice, I still maintain, was average at best. She could carry a tune, but if you're talking about sangin'? There are about 40 dozen other names that come to mind before Aaliyah.

Again, I'm not pegging her as a slut. But she's got much more in common with the girls listed above than say India Arie or Jill Scott or Erykah Badu.

Violator, you're completely right on this. Aliyah had an unremarkable voice, no real personality to speak of, but, and this is crucial, she was stunningly beautiful. You'd see interviews with her and almost not notice how bland she was because she looked so good. She was fortunate to get some great singles handed to her by producers at the top of their game. Try Again, Are You That Somebody, no one can argue with the quality of those tracks, but I give credit for that to the backroom boys, not Aliyah.

As a dancer she was only ever as good as her choreographer. The cold truth is there has been virtually no really impressive dancing in pop music since the early 90s. Usher is the only one who's provided some great moments dance wise but he's also provided a lot of crap moments.

As for her being a forerunner of the singer/dancer/actress package, first of all that's highly debatable. Janet was just as okay an actress as her and a better dancer. Secondly, is that really a good thing? I'm sure Aliyah's aunty Gladys Knight couldn't act to save her life, but the woman could sang and didn't need a choreographer to cover up for her weaknesses on stage. Do you really want a jack of all trades and master of none?

So this song is all about this girl's dedication to giving head. the guys in the neighborhood can all vouch for her, too--Cassie is the best in town!

Not my fave. confused Even Ashanti's stuff was more appealing than this...

Aaliyah wasnt a crap singer! She was great!

AALIYAH was great!

she actually got better at singing while she matured,

remember, she made her first 2 albums between the ages of 14 and 17 so she will still a kid,

as for the lyrical content of her first album, that album was written by R Kelly entirely so its not her fault for any of those lyrics at all so dont blame her in any way,

One in a million was the bomb! and groundbreaking and was Timbalands first big smash hit as a producer,

and her last album was even better! Listen to the vocals on some of the tracks, she was even better than ever,

Better than the shit thats out these days!

and Aaliyah was 100% Black, both her parents were black,

Its not Aaliyahs fault she was so damn stunning to look at,

in fact, she didnt even try to be sexy at all, she was just herself and that naturally occured,

check out the clothes she wore during one in a million era! Baggy, and straight up great styling!

check out this live performance of "if your girl only knew"

at Least Aaliyah sang live almost every performance she gave and danced as well in most of them!

If your girl only knew "Live"

To label her in the same crowd as the talentless breed of Ciara and Cassie is an insult to Aaliyah and her memory!

Anyone who dares to make such an assumption is ridiculing themselves!

Aaliyah was the bomb!

Just watched your link and it proves the points made earlier. Her dancing was lazy and the vocals were weak. The only good thing about it was the track. RnB hadn't totally lost the funk by that point, but as for her performance it was average. If a young artist gave such an uninspiring performance you'd all be dissing it and quite rightly so.

Aaliyah wasn't the greatest singer by any stretch, but her vocals on "At Your Best (You Are Love)" are downright stunning. love love love Anyone who says she couldn't sing needs to listen to that one again.
