I remember Prince deciding not to tour the USA that year. I called up his management and spoke to someone (I forget his name -- not one of the managers) and let him know about my disappointment. He replied, "Well, absence makes the heart grow fonder." And then a couple months later, the US was told Prince would give us a concert film instead. Pretty cool, but not quite like being there, that's for sure. A year later, Prince came around and gave the USA the Lovesexy tour. It was WORTH the wait!

1987 was a GREAT year for music. It was also a great year for Prince. He released one of his best albums that year ('Sign O' The Times') and he also had the best band of his entire career. In addition,he closed out the year with an excellent concert film, and another new album ('The Black Album') that was receiving ALOT of buzz, even though it wasn't officially released at the time.1987 was an exciting time to be a Prince fan because he was at the top of his game back then.

Other great songs/albums from that awesome year...

***Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam 'Spanish Fly'---In the summer of '87,I was playing this record like crazy.Remember "Head To Toe" and "Lost In Emotion"?

***Club Nouveau 'Life,Love and Pain'---Even though this record came out in late 1986,it was STILL kicking ass in '87,with the summer hit "Why You Treat Me So Bad".I also loves the lesser known jams like "Promises,Promises" and the kickass ballad "Let Me Go".

***The Whispers "Rock Steady"---This song was da jam!! R&B radio ate this one up,and it became a summer smash. One of the earliest LA and Babyface productions.

***Michael Jackson 'Bad'---In the fall of '87,MJ's album was the talk of the music world.I was on vacation in New Jersey that summer and when the first single "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" came out,it was like mass hysteria. My friends back in Cali were calling me,asking me if I had heard it yet! Btw,my favorite song on this album is "Another Part Of Me".That's too funky!

***Sheila E 'Sheila E.'---How ironic that Sheila would become Prince's drummer at the same time she releases the strongest solo album of her career. This album was filled with killer songs ("Faded Photographs" could have been a huge pop/rock/MTV smash..."Love On A Blue Train" is a funk tour de force..."Pride and The Passion" is a lovely "sequel" to "The Glamorous Life"..."Hon E Man" is fierce and bold).

1987 was a good year. The 80's had good music. My age was (c'mon do you think I would spill the beans, nay!). Prince was awsome during the 80's, just as he still is today. lol

1987 was a great year. I graduated high school, I entered college, I jammed on Sign of the Times, I started to learn guitar, and I was in my first "serious" relationship. What a year!

we differ on this one: MJ had His Own Horn Section Playing on the "BAM Board" with "Another Part of Me".that was a 80's thing all the way Keyboard as Horns&MJ had His Horn Jam here especially on the Live Version.I dug How "Heartbreak Hotel" Went into "Another Part of Me"."Liberian Girl" is the Cut.

WAIT, HOLD UP! Didn't y'all forget something?? JESSE JOHNSON's Shockadelica album. Next to Sign O' The Times, that was my most played album of the year. I had all the 12" singles too -- he had some of the best remixes.

er, actually after Sign O' The Times, Sheila E. was my most played album that year, and then Shockadelica. In 1988, it became Lovesexy and Tyka's Royal Blue album... and Cherelle's Affair.

Oh, how wonderful it would be to go back to the 80's.
To be young again and see Prince and Culture Club and
Cyndi Lauper videos, to name a few, on tv again.

This time I could sneek and see Prince in concert and see
Purple Rain on the big screen at the movies.

If there only was a time machine.

Great topic!

First, I still...can't stand...cringe...nearly tear off the radio from my car...okay tear off the dial in my attempt to stop, silence, disconnect, it when I hear The Whispers "Rock Steady"!!!

I can't stand that song, that one and "Cassanova" by Lavert!!! Nnnooo!

Okay hears my recollection...

Funny that you would bring this topic up, I dugged out my '87 VHS collection/compilation of videos just the other week. I started to record stuff off of MTV and BET at the time and hadn't looked at that stuff for years. I also recorded Rosie Perez whenever she danced on Soul Train, man she was HOT!

I have tapes for general videos and one for Prince stuff specifically, anyway, I did that for 87, 88 and 89.

One of the observations I came away with was how in 1988, the swing beat of Hip Hop and New Jack blew up. Songs, especially RnB songs, BEFORE that had a straight steady funk grooves.

But in 88 and 89 things got a little bad with all the Hip Hop stuff. I remember NOT seeing the FUNK category anymore in record stores! Like people though Rap was Funk! Nooo!

Example are some of the Jam and Lewis songs they did with Nona Hendrix, remember "Why Should I Cry"? some serious FUNK! And songs they produced for Herb Albert and Janet, etc. Remember "Don't You Want Me"? Andre Cymone was in that video...very cool!

Steady grooves, very MPLS sound even in non-Prince/Jam and Lewis produced stuff.

I loved that.

Another song was this one really funky freaky song by Jody Watley called "Still A Thrill" had a great Linn clap funk beat! Was produced by Andre Cymone and David Z.

I also remeber seeing a double feature with Dirty Dancing and Sign "O" The Times movie...that was great! I loved both movies! Although I really enjoyed Dirty Dancing, I really wanted to see and anticipated seeing Prince's movie next!

Great year, the last year before Rap and early Hip Hop overtook the music industry!
