I agree with your sentiment. However, I think Beck is the shit. If there's any song that's remotely close to a parody of Prince I think this is the one. But I think Beck gets the seal of approval of genuine artistry and not some overrated novelty act.

musicians and gearheads tend to hate beck because he's self-taught and became popular by way of his DIY aesthetic. that's not considered "real musicianship" to people who listen to jeff beck and steve vai albums.

Not so fast, I listen to both Beck Hansen and Jeff Beff, and I'm a musician. I know many musicians who like both Becks. Don't let the closed minded folks you know (or the ones here in this thread wink ) give the rest of us a bad name!!

cool

i'm not casting any absolutes. i do know the "kind" who would dismiss beck because he has an element of art and flash and showmanship to his work, as if that somehow diminishes the "seriousness" of his music. funny thing is, on a totally personal level, i think beck's craftmanship gets in the way of his originality as an artist more often than not, and while i'm a big fan of beck, i'd love to see him loosen up more as a musician and fuse more seamlessly with the showman side of himself.

disbelief I've heard a lot about Beck but this was my first time actually hearing him.....don't get the Prince comparison at all....looked like a white guy hollering and dancing off beat to me.

He's really more than that.

And everybody, that whole song is a satire of the slow jam. Listen to the song itself. It's about a white boy trying to ball on a budget. The fact that any given white boy can't pull it off like a soul master is the POINT OF THE SONG AND THE PERFORMANCE.

Exactly, his whole thing is meant to be satirical--"tricked out Hyundais, fresh packs of gum, Thursday night I think I'm pregnant again"

Beck takes his music seriously, and it's really good, but the whole thing is a bit of a joke, kind of like Zappa.

That's the difference between him & Lenny, who seems to take his own image seriously.

I think it's the same as the people who say Mary J Blige singing off key is ok because she does it with "emotion". lol

Beck's singing isn't his strongest point. But unlike Mary, he does a lot of other things. He definitely samples, literally & figuratively, but the end result is highly original to me.

I've seen him do a one man show of folk music, telling stories that were brilliant & hilarious, and I've seen him lead a huge funky band & inspiring thousands of people to dance. Somehow they were both completely in character. He didn't need to become Chris Gaines to do something different. He's a dork who does it all.

I understand not liking him (particularly for his singing & lack of passion) but he's got a lot of talent, and probably even the haters would have to admit he's got good taste.

dude, Beck is NOT a "novelty" or "comedy" act, tho he dabbled in those areas early on. i think it's really funny how people like you only remember the "Loser" song and such... Beck can stretch out much further than that... try and track down an Odelay live bootleg on DVD... Beck is his own thing man... i can see that's a problem for some Jeff Beck-type fans tho.

I'm not tracking down a damn thing. I've heard Odelay. It was representation enough of his faux-funk, Beatle-around-the-bush, non-singing azz for me not to be interested in him. finger Beck. I'm not feeling him.

whatever, man... "Debra" is one of my least favourite Beck songs anyway... and I get where you're coming from to a certain degree, but Beck has songs that can really "move" you, too...and he works with some of the best musos in the industry..... his silly shit shouldn't be taken seriously... it's a laugh, right? probably why so many Americans mistake him for English... it's called IRONY, America! unfortunately peeps in this forum don't understand the lighter side of music sometimes it seems

pssh

i'm not talking about Debra, which is grating to my ears, i'm
talking about the entire Sea Change album.

have you heard that one? surely you don't think there's anything
phony in his delivery on that record.

it's more personal than Prince's "The Truth" or "One Nite Alone"
in each and ever song.

i don't think it's more personal than 'the truth' or (espcially) 'one nite alone', but it is an extremely powerful album. i think it's the first beck album where he actually SINGS like a man who has a voice, instead of just trying to sound too kool for skool. i don't know how much of the "real" beck we really get on any of his albums - i get a feeling he's very good at keeping his personal life and feelings very well protected from the public - but "sea change" was one of the most moving, organic albums i'd heard in a long time. it's a cut above the rest of his albums.
