Beck f***ing SUCKS to me and I don't respect his "talent". He's no genius. hmph! Music done in jest proves nothing to me. Greatness doesn't need a wink or a nod or sarcasm. Dude is overrated in my book. 3rd tier "genius" on the genius scale. biggrin

Not all of his music is done "in jest". hmm Are you just judging his work by this one clip, which for some reason people think he's trying to sound like Prince? (A connection I'll never understand really understand personally shrug)

People act like Prince invented falsetto singing or something, and anyone who sings in that manner must be copying him. neutral

Listen to Sea Change if you haven't heard it already. He sounds NOTHING like he does on this song, "Debra" that's been posted here.

I have said this myself many times on here before. I certainly don't need clarification of that fact. I've heard a few songs and I don't hear genius in this artist.

i've been listening to this album a lot again lately and it's just such a
good effort. there's not a bad song on it and the mood is perfect.

such incredibly good songwriting and sincere singing. you can't knock the
man before you've heard this album.

I understand your preference for Prince's music, but how much of Beck's music do you own? Have you heard Sea Change or Guero yet?

Midnite Vultures has its ups and downs, but it's meant to be a fun record.

His new album be comin out soon!!

Beck sort of reminds me of Prince in other ways too. He has so many different styles and you never know what he's gonna do next. I'm assuming the people on this thread that have no love for him have not heard any of his records.

I wouldn't necessarily call Beck a genius. But he doesn't have to be. Without question, he's one of the more interesting artists out there today. If 'Sea Change' was all he'd done, he'd have accomplished one of the most beautiful, reflective albums of the last decade.

Okay, I'm gunna lay it down for some of y'all:

Mixed Bizness is the most Princey song Beck has done,

closely followed by Get Real Paid

2ndly, Beck said Debra was NOT inspired by Prince but started out as a soul "slo jam" he'd muck around with in encores... it then turned to the recorded version on Midnite Vultures... which is a great record in its own right btw and yes, it nods to Prince in parts.

And is Beck a genius?... in some ways, yes (especially lyrically) but let's not compare him to Prince... they're both musical charlatans... but he's as different to Prince as Bowie is.

smile

tribute: when someone rips your style for one song or album

copycat: when someone rips your style, your image, your whole vibe, and tries to make a career out of it.

now. which has beck done where prince is concerned? hmmm

I've heard Odelay and a few tracks from Guero. I'm not at all impressed with him. I'm not going to hear any more from him if I can help it because I won't keep listening to an artist that I'm not that fond of. I'll stick to the other Beck...Jeff Beck.

Okay. That's fair, but can you really say an artist is overrated when in reality you don't really like him?

I don't think anyone's called him a certified genius. I didn't.

musical charlatans - I like that!

I'm a long time Prince fan & a short time Beck fan.
I liked a few songs from Midnite Vultures
but overall the cd didn't click with me.
And I never liked the song Debra.
I found Sea Change to be too Gordon Lightfootish. Too folksy.
Lately I've been listening to Guero & I really like it.
Bought the special edition & the remix edition.
I find with Beck its an adventure every cd.

I don't hear it either. Dude was off key from the very first note. I couldn't get through an entire 2 mins of that bs without my eye twitching and my teeth being on edge.

hah! @ Beck

You made it 2 minutes.. the Force is strong in you.. But I feel you.. first 30 seconds of wrong notes I had to quit it..

I dig where he is trying to go is all I can say about it.. but off notes are off Notes..

musicians and gearheads tend to hate beck because he's self-taught and became popular by way of his DIY aesthetic. that's not considered "real musicianship" to people who listen to jeff beck and steve vai albums.
