Two of the greatest soul starts of All-Times.

How are these two guys when it comes to performac. I have their music but have never seen them on stage. Are they in the same mold as James Brown.

Wilson Pickett was a great performer - energetic, very positive and charismatic. He was not really that much of a dancer but he had his own distinguished style of performance.

I got so hung up on Pickett I completely forgot about Joe Tex. Gawd that man was soul music incarnated. He obviously borrowed a lot from Brown's performances. He also liked to show off his dancing skills.

Here is his classic Soul Train appearance with 'Ain't gonna bump no more.' This one really takes you back. Amazing.

Two super soulmen from the classic Atlantic roster.

Saw Wilson Pickett do a couple of tunes on an old Murray the K multi-artist Easter show.
He really didn't have to be a great dancer as his strong suit was his soulful voice, great tunes and stellar band.

Joe Tex was another powerfull performer but more of a cutup showman and his band was a bit funkier in the JB vein.

Both are from a lost era when you didn't have to have discussions about what Soul/R&B was.

Some more Pickett trivia....

Prior to becoming a popular solo performer, he was with the Falcons, a soul group which also featured Eddie Floyd, Sir Mack Rice and Joe Stubbs (brother of the Four Tops' Levi Stubbs). The Falcoms used to record/perform with female backup singers called the Primettes, who later became the Supremes.

Wilson's performance of 635-4789 (my favorite Pickett track) was the only good thing about the movie Blues Brothers 2000. He also had a bit part in another sorry-ass movie, Sergeant Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band as a member of the all-star finale band.

Engine No. 9 is another stand out track for me.

I need to get some more Joe Tex into my collection.
