I loved her first CD. I really did not get into her second.
To me, she has this, "This is me" persona, and I like that about her.
Erika imagine comes as too gimmicky.....I love a artist that comes out and just sings and has a personality.....Erika just seems so one dimenional to me.

Neo Soul isn't for everyone. I can't stand Crunk music. I hate most Rock/Pop music because the shit sounds the same, which is what a lot of people say about other genres of music. The thing is, either you like a certain genre or you don't, because it's the genre you don't like more so the artist. If you don't like Jill, chances are you don't like Neo Soul.

WTF is everyone talking about "Neo-Soul" for?

Erykah came out a few years ago and admitted it was just a marketing label for (at the time) new r&B/soul artists that didn't really mean anything--just a way to segregate and homogenize black artists basically. It isn't a genre, it was the idea of some balding overweight liver spotted white male record exec who thought...Erykah, D'Angelo, Jill...not "soul" but...A-HA! NEO SOUL! Brilliance! rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes

You're completely wrong on how that title came about. Kedar Massenberg, who discovered D'Angelo and Badu, came up with that term for D'Angelo's debut. Originally the term was "Neo Classic Soul" and eventually people just started calling it Neo Soul.

Don't let these pretentious artists fool you into thinking it was a marketing ploy, they are just showing their frustration because Neo Soul isn't marketed the way other music genres are marketed. Think about it, EVERY form of music has a "label" so it makes no sense to go after Neo Soul.

All of that is a cherry on my pie,,but ooooone simple ?uestion:

Whats so NEO about SOUL?

Damn near all of them didn't come up with something neo. Its either Stevie, Marvin or Al Green.

It is a marketing ploy by none other but Kedar Massenberg in atempt to create a so-called new "rage". Seems that Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, India Arie, Jaguar Wright, Bilal, D'Angelo and ?uestlove are among the "pretentious artists" since they publicly dismissed the term as a marketing ploy.

A true artist wouldn't like to be labeled anyway, so I think their attitude about the term is a plus to their character.

As far as Jilly from Philly, I was hammered for posting a thread about the same shit,,,motherfuckers are snobby to the 8th power disbelief I like her but she simply bores the living hell outta me.

I dig Erykah tho, and I don't see how one dimenional or gimmicky about her ass since she ALWAYS brings something different than what she previously delievered. But then again, thats only me.

The problem is simple: They aren't making money off it. Now, if these same artists were making the same cheese off Neo Soul that the rappers are making off Hip Hop, then they'd EMBRACE the term Neo Soul. Believe that. Their disdain for the term is ONLY about money - Or lack there of. So what they're trying to do is distance themselves from that term because they think it hurts their sales when the term isn't the problem, but the lack of marketing for the genre.

Take for instance, Jaguar Wright - She titled her last album "Divorcing Neo To Marry Soul" and her album STILL flopped.

Neo Soul simply means "The NEW (NEO) generation of soul artists that are keeping & maintaining the OLD Soul Music sound" - Simple as that.

And always remember this - Regardless of what they "label" you, if you're shit is good, it will transcend the label. MOST artist don't understand the "business" side of the industry so they disregard what needs to be done in order to get their shit out to the masses.

The alternative is distribute your own shit and more than likely not sell shit on a grand scale. pretentious? Yes. But if you're gonna get in the record biz you're gonna have to play their game for the most part or end up like Amel Larrieux - releasing albums without any fanfare and flopping.

Rock artists don't complain about being called Rock. Hip Hop artists don't complain about being called Hip Hop. Pop artists dont complain about being called Pop. Why? Because there's big money in those genres. Neo Soul artists wouldn't give a damn about that label if they were making the same amounts as those aforementioned genres.

The problem isn't the term, it's the lack of marketing the genre.

The term "neo-soul" was invented and spread through society by that asslicking class of professional liars/whores more popularly known as THE MEDIA - largely if not exclusively composed of men and women of whom it can be said they have NEVER played anything that ANYONE ever gave a fuck about. Possibly they did it for money, but more likely they did it to feel as if THEY were actually hip human beings who were part of some cultural vanguard that, in reality, existed only in THEIR OWN MINDS. *Nothing* gives music writers such a hard-on as imagining they are part of a cultural vanguard! For christ's sake, they BECOME writers because they CAN'T play anything anyone wants to listen to, but still they desperately need to feel culturally relevant, to feel culturally authoritative. Spreading myths such as Neo-soul accomplishes this. And then they spend years writing about it. Media whores can never be part of a real cultural vanguard, LOL because you have to possess a soul FIRST, and they don't qualify. Neo-soul is pretend nonsense. Case closed.

I hate taking people to school but if I must, wink class begins in 1...2...3...

Here's an exerpt from an interview that Kedar gave in 2002, around Grammy time: http://www.pbs.org/newsho..._2-27.html

Here's the man himself, click on "About Us" and you will get the explanation and WHO originated it as well: http://www.kedar.com/

Wait, here's yet ANOTHER site that tells of the origin of the term: http://randb.about.com/od...eoSoul.htm

The media didn't do shit. Again, if cats in Neo Soul we're making money like the Hip-Hoppers, they'd be in love with that damn term and would be promoting the fuck out of it.
