Neo Soul isn't for everyone. I can't stand Crunk music. I hate most Rock/Pop music because the shit sounds the same, which is what a lot of people say about other genres of music. The thing is, either you like a certain genre or you don't, because it's the genre you don't like more so the artist. If you don't like Jill, chances are you don't like Neo Soul.

WTF is everyone talking about "Neo-Soul" for?

Erykah came out a few years ago and admitted it was just a marketing label for (at the time) new r&B/soul artists that didn't really mean anything--just a way to segregate and homogenize black artists basically. It isn't a genre, it was the idea of some balding overweight liver spotted white male record exec who thought...Erykah, D'Angelo, Jill...not "soul" but...A-HA! NEO SOUL! Brilliance!

It is a marketing ploy by none other but Kedar Massenberg in atempt to create a so-called new "rage". Seems that Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, India Arie, Jaguar Wright, Bilal, D'Angelo and ?uestlove are among the "pretentious artists" since they publicly dismissed the term as a marketing ploy.

A true artist wouldn't like to be labeled anyway, so I think their attitude about the term is a plus to their character.

As far as Jilly from Philly, I was hammered for posting a thread about the same shit,,,motherfuckers are snobby to the 8th power I like her but she simply bores the living hell outta me.

I dig Erykah tho, and I don't see how one dimenional or gimmicky about her ass since she ALWAYS brings something different than what she previously delievered. But then again, thats only me.

I love Jill Scott's music, I think she is a very talented singer, one of a very few singers out here who deserve her props....the girl could blow Beyonce out the water with her voice

Rock artists don't complain about being called Rock. Hip Hop artists don't complain about being called Hip Hop. Pop artists dont complain about being called Pop. Why? Because there's big money in those genres. Neo Soul artists wouldn't give a damn about that label if they were making the same amounts as those aforementioned genres.

The problem isn't the term, it's the lack of marketing the genre.
