Jill Scott I've tried and tried believe me I have, but I just can't get into her . Sorry all you JS fans, but I guess you gotta be on a certain vibe to feel her music and I'm not on that vibe. Anybody else out there that feels this way?

I've heard only one song from her that I actually like, but normally I don't really get into her either.

I don't feel her, either. I think she's extremely talented and lovely, but her clean-cut vegetables "nu-soul" vibe does nothing for me (and no one get offended -- that's just how I personally hear her music ). It's the same reason an artist like D'Angelo does nothing for me... too coffee-house (or at least Brown Sugar was; I'll give Voodoo another try again... I promise).
Artists like Erykah and Meshell do much more for me because they're far more intriguing as personae and more adventurous and gritty, musically.

Jill's spoken word recording of "Thickness" is far from clean-cut veggies; based on an encounter she had with a teenager at a city bus stop, it's a pretty stinging portrayal that forces collective "self" reflection for issues of youth, raw sexuality, and misogyny in the black community. For me the message is just as resonant and urgent as those explored by Badu in 'The Other Side of the Game', "Times A Wastin'" and "Danger". To see her perform it live is something akin to being stabbed in your gut. [Edited 7/23/06 1:04am]

[Edited 7/23/06 1:04am] Oh, I don't doubt Jill has written some meaningful songs/spoken-word pieces -- it's just that the smooth, overly mellow and clean (to my ears, anyway) production on her albums bores me.

I'm curious now. Which song do you like? "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
