LOL @ 'flickted I have the album First Born Second. I've played it exactly one time. Couldn't get into to it because he is riffing on subjects which I feel he has no first hand experience in... living in the ghetto and being really poor and such. The dude grew up middle class, both of his parents were educators or something, he went to a performing arts school and was classically trained vocally from what I understand. The music is good but lyrically it just sounded so forced and wannabe ghetto life. And to top it off he'd be in he middle of a really interesting song and start cursing and n*gga this and b*tch that for no reason at all. icanttypeforsh*tedit [Edited 7/24/06 16:47pm] I didn't know anything about his background but some of the songs just didn't hit w/ me. He seems to be really trying too hard w/ some of the themes, it does seems forced @ times.

Bought the album because of the "Love it" single and then most of the album wasn't like Love it. Not at all. I put it down for a long time. Then Byron made me a mix that had Sometimes on it and maybe it was the fact that it was isolated and it grew on me and grew and I became obsessed with that song. And despite his upbringing, his habit sure casts shadows on any successful living he had done or might do in the future. So him singing about ghetto life is OK by me. I have been watching these clips as I have never seen or heard a live performance until now and I have been just floored by how gifted this man is. Does he trip the fuck out? yes. But he is feeling that shit and I LOVE that about him. Damn, freeze that Jay Leno clip at 3:54.....he is flying high. You can tell the way he ends that song that he is literally riding that guitar. Damn, that's some crazy shit. I only wish I could have caught it when it first aired 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

As for his being in key, remember that Youtube isn't exactly the most flattering vehicle for sound What I loved about the performances is the depth of his range. From high to low, he has the chops to slay in both ranges 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

And when he got the chance to show he's not just some record label gimmick he did and took his career to the next level. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He shouldn't sing in falsetto....it sounded like someone was twisting his balls and he was in immense pain. His natural voice is great. His performance looked like he was trying to hard to be interesting.

His falsetto is amazing. He should not abandon it. It might not have been as focused as it can be because of the fact he was fittin out on stage 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I'm just tired of singers who choose to sing live sounding like crap for half of the song. I didn't take him seriously until he started belting out the rest of the song in his regular voice. He sounded hot at the end. How long has he been around ? Since '98 or '99?

Release date for 1st Born is July 2001. He's way overdue for that new album to drop. Get your shit together record company and do this man some justice. I've heard a few of these tracks and they are great. More of the direction I would have loved to see him go in on the first album. His singing is more focused and on display than the first, imo. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

"Fastlane" is really about life in the "Fastlane"... Dying young! Hustling! So he was actually emulating the lyrics by body movement. I don't see what the big deal is. Like a mini-play.

Well, I'm very real....Classically trained or not....it sounded a mess to me. When you hit the stage live...your act should be tight! Being classically trained doesn't mean anything. Prince wasn't classically trained or had opera lessons. I've seen Bilal before and I know that's his "thing". I actually think he's talented singer. And I'm speaking based on that particular footage. Don't get offended. IMO, as a performer I don't feel you have to sound and act erratic in order to get your point across. I found it distracting and pointless, like he was trying hard to be weird.

workingupahiyellasweat said: BlaqueKnight said: Exactly. Just what entertainment needs. A shot in the arm from the boring ass walking back and forth with the cooler-than-thou expressions for no reason. Nobody with talent cuts loose these days. That's why the old school tours sell out and most of these new performers can't pack a large club. Entertainers are supposed to entertain; even if it makes them look avant-garde. Everybody's afraid of not looking "cool". All the songs are tracked because no one wants to sound like they ever make mistakes. All the moves are choreographed because no one trusts natural movements anymore. Its sickening. Good to see something that looks REAL for a change. Music needs someone that sings on key. Word!
