This represents all that is Bilal... the guy who's the crazy cousin you don't wanna invite to the barbecue, but you know he's gonna put on a show so you invite him anyway.

Exactly. Just what entertainment needs. A shot in the arm from the boring ass walking back and forth with the cooler-than-thou expressions for no reason. Nobody with talent cuts loose these days. That's why the old school tours sell out and most of these new performers can't pack a large club. Entertainers are supposed to entertain; even if it makes them look avant-garde.
Everybody's afraid of not looking "cool". cool
All the songs are tracked because no one wants to sound like they ever make mistakes.
All the moves are choreographed because no one trusts natural movements anymore.
Its sickening. Good to see something that looks REAL for a change.

This performance made me laugh. It was funny. It was entertaining. It was...unique.

Good job. First time I've ever seen this Bilal cat.

Regardless of what one might think of this video, "1st Born Second" is an amazing album. Everybody should check it out. There's incredible stuff on there.

You know, with all respect, but do not talk about him like that until you properly heard his music. Nevermind this video, his voice IS on par with Prince's. At least very, very close.

Not a big fan of Bilal but that peformance was cool. Anyone that's hip to Funkadelic, Fishbone, Screaming Jay Hawkins, and P knows where Bilal was coming from with that jam. And I dug the opening notes of "Purple Haze" at the end.

Yeah, I'll grant that. I don't begrudge his attire and stage presence, plus his band was pretty good. I just don't see much in his music that warrants the hype he's garnered.

I laughed my butt off but I wouldn't buy an album based on this performance. I kept wishing he would quit clowning and sing because it was a good song.

I have the album First Born Second. I've played it exactly one time. Couldn't get into to it because he is riffing on subjects which I feel he has no first hand experience in... living in the ghetto and being really poor and such.

The dude grew up middle class, both of his parents were educators or something, he went to a performing arts school and was classically trained vocally from what I understand. The music is good but lyrically it just sounded so forced and wannabe ghetto life. And to top it off he'd be in he middle of a really interesting song and start cursing and n*gga this and b*tch that for no reason at all.

I hear you & you're right - I misspoke when I said "as corny as going on Leno", I should have stated it better initially (I was trying to be brief & get it out in one shot lol )... Nah, I don't think he's crazy. I think he's dedicated...

Nope, you were right, Leno is corny. He tries to get a 'lil edgy now and then, but...

And Bilal ain't crazy but artists can be guilty of overdoing the gimmick thing sometimes, even Princey.

I dug the second clip a lot better.

if this is true:

His eventual classical training at New York City's Mannes Music Conservatory ensured him able to sing opera in seven languages as well as an extended musical vocabulary. Bilal is a young disciple of King Tubby and Jelly Roll Morton; music of the early twenties, that pitch and swing, the bass striding on all fours.

nod

he's proven his jazz chops to me and i've heard a bit of his classical influence and would like to hear more of it.

actually, in that interview i posted he said he'd like to do a full on opera 'cuz he's sick of seeing artist just standing in one place singing the same ol' song. i've always wanted P to do this. i think the closest he's come is the prince album. lol

if you didn't listen to the interview, you should. believe it or not he's saying some interesting stuff in it, despite the fact that he loses his gotdamn mind during it here and there. nutso
