Too Close is a dirty little song...and I like it. Wasn't too keen on Wifey. From Central High in St. Paul.

You know , when i heard it @ first on a radio-show , when it came out , i was like " Hey , that's LO-KEY ! " . It was a dj-less shuffle-joints hour , so the track wasn't mentioned at that moment . I went a lil' nutz 'cause i was eagerly waiting for some new work after their Back 2 Tha Howse smash . The voice of the singer who starts the first verse is my fave . . . . i couldn't stand those bastids...it's bad enough i had to deal with a roommate in job corps who thought these cats were great and kept their cd on constantly...them and savage garden.

Yep , that can happen .
But i think this style has much more soul than a lot of the current commercial acts in HipHop-R&B . There's a good melody and their vocals , especially the first singer , have quality

Two thumbs up for up-tempo R&B. You can pull those records up and play them and people will still dance to them to this day (along with Ruff Endz's "No More" which had a similar feel).

Speaking of Minneapolis R&B acts, whatever happened to Koffee Brown? They were linked up with NEXT and that whole scene.

I used to love "Weekend Thing" by them. Same here. That male/female vocal dynamic is missing in today's R&B. They reminded me of an updated Peaches & Herb or Ashford & Simpson. "After Party" will always be a 2 a.m. club closing cut for me.

I liked "After Party", too. You know what I found unique about "Weekend Thing"? One day I actually decided to listen to the lyrics. It tripped me out when I realized that Vee was singing about smoking weed! You rarely hear women outside of rap sing about weed smoking.
I personally don't smoke at all but I know a lot of women who do (some are even reading this thread ). It just caught me off guard when I actually listened to the lyrics. Vee's verse: Workin' on stress {Stress}, hopped in the jeep (Yes) Light up, take two to the chest Tired of the wheels, tripped out bosses Talkin' threats, but I could care less I just wanna Let my hair down Puff-puff I think I'm there now [Edited 7/25/06 13:09pm]

Speaking of Next
Did you know this... In late 2005, Next's record company Interscope Records released details of the band's first album in four years, which has yet to be given a title. The album is slated for a late 2006 release, with Interscope Records employing Award Winning producers Jermaine Dupri and Rich Harrison to provide the melodies along with respected songwriters Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Jon Bryant to write lyrics.. I don't think there's ever been a song with lyrics as hilariously corny as "Too Close." On the album version, it starts with "I wonder if she can tell I'm hard right now." My response: "If she can't, something is wrong."
Anyway, these would have to be Next's best two songs. I couldn't stand their debut single, "Butta Love." [Edited 7/25/06 15:36pm] "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I know this lady who use to be the manager of a hotel here in Oklahoma and she told me a story one time about how R.L. and Next were staying at the hotel and just really had nasty attitudes towards the employees and they also had alot of groupies hanging around, but that didn't surprise me. What I didn't like was the fact that she said they talked down to her and the other hotel employees as if their shit didn't stink. Their attitudes is probably the reason why their careers never really got big .
