New good music As I get older I find it harder to find new music that is good- non-mainstream. I usually hear new stuff through the community radio station I listen to but lately they have not played anything interesting to me.
I feel so old when I listen to the commercial radio stations or watch MTV- I do not recognize any of the new bands. How do all of you find new music? I need something new to inspire me.. Thanks!

Ex-Moderator | Most new music I find through recommendations from friends. And even orgers. lol. Radio is dead, for the most part. At least in Mpls it is. |

I still do magazines. Paste is a good one. They contain free sampler CDs and the demographic skews older.

http://www.pastemagazine.com/ My husband gets Paste. That is good- I do not think I read the last one or listened to the CD either. Guess I should do that. The local community radio station I listen to plays a lot of stuff from the Paste Cd usually which is good. It is free form and local dj's play what they like so that helps to find local musica as well I must say I have only been on myspace once... I am sure Jersey is going to cringe when he reads that.. Like Erin said, just go to the music section and browse the genres, it's a great way to find new bands that you may like.

I can't be a fan of any joe shmoe that lives down the street.

Well, I saw a Utada Hikaru video on MTV on some international program or other and downloaded all her albums on the back of that (early albums it turns out are crap j-pop, but the later stuff is good ), so occasionally MTV still has its good points. Normally I just find out about new stuff through friends or just by following a trail from artists I currently like to others I might like.

I go to the alternative and new music spots on Napster and AOL radio.... He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

You're very lucky. | |

Heck, even someone playing something for you that they didn't write is enough for me. Someone serenaded me once with a guiter. :swoon: |

I just sampled the guitar from the original, cut it up a bit and looped it, just added some keys and used it as a chance to do some nice harmonies. Which reminds me. It's all on minidisc and I still haven't managed to put it on the computer let alone on to CD. I'm scared I might lose my music. It's really nothing at all, but it has meaning for me.
