Ezy Rider and Machine Gun (tie)

Cool, interesting choices, namepeace.

Those two are the first that come to mind when I think of Hendrix as a singular artist.

MACHINE GUN!

1) funky as hell (as is the entire "band of gypsies" CD/album)

2) arguably the greatest guitar solo ever. technically amazing, even more emotially envoking. you feel like you're right in the middle of vietnam! his strat "cried out loud"....

3) love the way his guitar parallels his vocals too

Too bad Valleys Of Neptune and Burning Desire weren't released officially

I also love the Electric Ladyland demo and a song that i think is called
Can I Whisper In Your Ear

I guess i'll have to choose Little Wing (live)

It really changes from month to month. Isn't that really the case with most favorite artists? Is there ever really a favorite song?

Okay....I won't cop out...

If I had to choose, the one that stays with me the most is 'Foxey Lady'. The feedback at the beginning of the song is like a warning. And the guitar work is, arguably, as strong as any in his entire catalog.

I also gotta include "Little Miss Lover". I think that is a FUNKY song. The interplay between Jimmy's wah-wah and Mitch's drums is something special.

"May This Be Love", "Drifting", "Little Wing" - one word - BEAUTIFUL

"Belly Button Window" - one of my fave Hendrix songs, especially lyrically. I can literally "see" the song, it paints so vivid a picture.

Cool stuff all around.

Correction: I meant "My Friend" instead of "Belly Button Window", which is a cool song, too lol

Bold as Love is an incredible song, kind of overlooked, too.

Freedom, Purple Haze, Voodoo (both), Burning of the Midnight Lamp and many others all hold special places in my heart.

But if I choose one it will be big:

1983... A Merman I Should Turn to Be--though I can really only imagine it with the songs before & after it

Good choice. 1983 is a stellar composition, performance AND Production. For some reason, I never even considered it to be a song perse, cuz that seemed to be such a limiting tag for such a grandoise piece.

True, true. Not the best song on paper, but on record it's fantastic.

The thing that's so cool about Hendrix is besides the fact that the man was soooo ahead of his time as a guitarist, he was a very good songwriter. Even though I simply adore the hell out of the song "Bold As Love", of course, there are many others that I love to death as well. Really, all of his first album, every song, are gems. Same goes for his second album. Although E L L is much better, soundwise and production, it's not as "focused" as the first two. Although cuts like "1983", the blueprint for the Isley Bros 70's sound "Have You Ever Been", and the highly underrated beauty "The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp" which features Jimi on harpsichord. "Voodoo Child" and "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) are brilliant. This album sees Jimi in total "superstar" mode but definately still very much in control. My faves from him in his later era are definately "Drifting" and "In From The Storm". His "Machine Gun" could have only been done by Hendrix. But take that and then listen to the studio version of "Star Spangled Banner". This was definately the blueprint for Queen and Brian May's doubled guitar melodies.

You can easily tell what was going on in Jimi's life just by listening to his music. Totally different from someone like Prince who has a thousand songs already cut and there really is no way of telling when he actually recorded the songs. Let alone tell when he wrote them. The title cut "3121" sounds to these ears, like he cut that in 1988/89. But with Jimi, his music was so fresh and so "at the moment". With his first album, u can hear a man that has urgency and frustration. He wants the world to know and he, more than anything, just wants the chance to capture "his" sound so he can share it and hip folks to it. That's what I hear when I listen to "Are You Experienced", which by far, is my fave Hendrix album. He sounds more at eased and a little more at peace on Axis. On ELL, it shows the joy and the strain of superstardom. And all of the choas in the world and in his life definately shows in his work from there on. Although beauty and rage was always at the core of Jimi's best work.

The tracks on Axis were started one month after the AYE? sessions ended.
And both albums were done within the space of 1 year due to contractual obligations.

Electric Ladyland was started 3 months after the completion of Axis and was done in a whopping 7 months.

All 3 landmark albums were completed in under 2 years. eek

Oh man, I guess I'd say Voodoo Child, but the first song that came up in my head was Gypsy Eyes. I love that one. There are just too much though, and choosing one is tough.

Those are the two I'm thinking of (Voodoo Child--Slight Return that is). There are too many great songs to choose from. Actually I'll go with The Wind Cries Mary.

It is unreal. I knew Axis was cut very soon after Are You. I have Hendrix books showing session dates and so forth and was always impressed with the fact that those two albums were cut so close together. Although that was the norm during the 60's and 70's where many artists HAD to put out at least 2 releases a year because of contract deadlines. But of course, none were on the groundbreaking scope of Jimi's first 3 albums.

Also too Aud, I just look at the night and day difference between those 2 albums, although they were cut close together. Jimi's playing on Axis is so much more "polished". Especially on his rhythm playing. I actually prefer his leads way more on Are You, but his rhythm on Axis is flawless. I know the sound of the recording on Axis is more "smoother". I again, prefer the overall mix on Are You.
