just got a new ELO compilation

Mr.Blue Sky
Evil Woman
Don't Bring Me Down
Sweet Talkin' Woman
Shine A Little Love
Turn To Stone
The Diary Of Horace Wimp
Confusion
Hold On Tight
Livin' Thing
Telephone Line
All Over The World
Wild West Hero
Showdown
Ma-Ma-Ma Belle
Xanadu
Rockaria!
Strange Magic
Alright
Rock and Roll Is King

Electric Light Orchestra has always been one of my favorite bands.I already have the 2-CD 'Strange Magic:The Best of ELO' set that was released in 1995 and it's excellent, but I wanted a simple,one-disc compilation that I can play in my car. There are numerous ELO compilations...it seems that they release a new one every few years (lol). The problem is,every compilation seems to be missing one or two essential tracks and this compilation is no exception. It's missing "Do Ya" and "Can't Get It Out Of My Head",which is unacceptable for many fans.I like it,however, because it includes some songs that weren't featured on previous compilations, namely "All Over The World",a wonderful, overlooked gem from the 'Xanadu' movie soundtrack.

Anyone else got this CD? What are your favorite ELO songs?

I have a compilation issued in 1994 by Dino records, it covers the 1973-1985 period but it doesn't have the 2 tracks you mention. Fave album is Out Of The Blue" from '77.

if you have 'discovery', 'out of the blue' and 'xanadu', you don't need a greatest hits album. welll, i guess there are a FEW great ELO songs scattered on their other albums, but those three albums are the biggies for me.

Number one Jeff Lynne fan here wave
I have all ELO albums and a 3cd box set compilation with some interesting rarities (flashback)
I'm rebuying the remasters too but they're taking too long in between releases. They started in 2001 and there's still lots of stuff to be released pout

I even went to see The Orchestra some months ago giggle Only Kelly Groucutt and Mik Kaminski (+ Louis Clark) from the original band but it was fun nod

Don't believe ANXadu! A New Wold Record is your next album. Wait a couple of months for the remaster though smile
In the meantime you can try Discovery and Eldorado that are 2001 remastered and usually super cheap( I've seen them many times for about 7.77 dollars)

speaking of "Xanadu"...this new compilation doesn't feature the version with Olivia Newton John mad it's just a version with Jeff Lynne singing lead. It's not bad,I just prefer the original version that I'm familiar with.

i think calling NWR "must have" over 'Out of the Blue' is like preferring five minutes in a pick-up truck with meg ryan over a whole lost weekend in a waldorf-astoria penthouse suite with joan jett. i mean, everyone's got their tastes, i suppose...

He already has Joan Jett...I mean Out of the Blue
As I said I must-have every Jeff Lynne album. But putting Xanadu before A new World Record...come on.
And don't tell me it's a rainbow thing no no no!

huh? i was putting out of the blue before new world record. why? because NWR is good, but out of the blue is amazing.

and i'm a bigger xanadu fam than i am an elo fam, i'll admit that in an animated neon heartbeat.

I love the cover design, and I've always gotten a kick out of their logo. It looked like an interplanetary game of Simon.

ELO song of the day: "All Over The World"(1980) headbang

written by Jeff Lynne

Everybody all around the world, gotta tell you just what I heard
there's gonna be a party all around the world
I got a message on the radio, but where it came from,I don't really know
and I heard these voices calling all over the world

(chorus)
All over the world, everybody got the word
everybody everywhere is gonna feel tonight

Everybody walkin' down the street, everybody movin' to the beat
they're gonna get hot down in the USA (New York,Detroit,L.A.)
We're gonna take a trip across the sea, everybody come along with me
we're gonna hit the night down in gay Paree

(chorus)
All over the world, everybody got the word
everybody everywhere is gonna feel tonight

London,Hamburg,Paris,Rome,Rio,Hong Kong,Tokyo
L.A.,New York,Amsterdam,Monte Carlo,Shard End

(chorus)
All over the world, everybody got the word
everybody everywhere is gonna feel tonight

Everybody all around the world, gotta tell you just what I heard
everybody walkin' down the street,I know a place where we can meet
Everybody gonna have a good time, everybody will shine til the daylight

chorus

Technically, I think it was just two years. I think it first appeared on this album in 1976:

Simon came about in 1978. Why do I care? lol I just did some reasearch and interestingly enough, the game made its debut at Studio 54. There is a music connection! exclaim The two were synonymous to me as a kid growing up in the 70s, and at that point in my life game trumped music! biggrin

I think this ages old compilation is the only one we've got at home. It might be time to upgrade, since it was released in the late 70s. lol

The scene in "Xanadu" when ELO's song "All Over The World" comes on...it's so campy and silly, but it's hard to take your eyes away from it:

I don't think they're saying "Bruce" or "gross," but it sure sounds like "Bruce" to me. lol If you do a lyric search, you'll find sites that list either one as the word.

I can remember my dad buying the cassette of this when it was first released, I will have been about 7 years old at the time, I played it so much I wore the tape out, I have it on cd now of course and I still love it.

I have wondered whether it was "bruce" for a few decades now and it drives me crazy everytime I hear the song. I have always felt it can't be bruce because it makes no sense in the context of the song, which seems to be addressed to a woman. "Gross" never crossed my mind once and, frankly, that seems stranger than Bruce.

Ok, I found this on amiright.com, the misheard lyrics database. Davideye is right, it seems.

Jim Grieve adds: "Yes, 'Grroosss' is the actual word (taken straight off the lyric sheet). Jeff Lynne says it's just a word he made up. Although Mack (the German engineer who worked on this album) noted that it sounded kind of like the German word for 'good morning'('guten Morgen'). Most folks think it sounds like they're singing 'Bruce'. For that reason, when the song is performed these days, Jeff will sing 'Bruce' instead.

lol

sorry for jacking the thread.
