Left-handed guitarist...

do most play right-handed or left-handed guitars? Was Jimi Hendrix a lefty that played with his right-hand?

I'm asking because I was out shopping for an acoustic guitar for my daughter the other day and the sales guy asked if she was left-handed or right-handed. I told him she was left-handed. He handed her a guitar and told her to hold it the way it was most comfortable for her. She took the guitar and held it like a right-handed player. The sales guy told me that it would be best for her to learn to play a right-handed guitar because the selection of guitars are greater than left-handed ones.

I'm left handed and i've tried to hold a guitar right handed and it simply doesn't feel right. I bought a right handed guitar and had it restrung so i can play it the left handed way. Your daughter will have more choices when it comes to buying guitars. The standard left handed guitars you can buy are not as good quality either.

I think the sales guy told me that although a person may be left-handed, their left-hand may or may not be the dominate one. That might explain why some can play comfortably with their right hand, but some can't.

Thanks for the info. wink

The majority of players play right-handed guitars.
Jimi Hendrix, as far as I know, was right-handed but said he felt more comfortable playing left-handed.
He used right-handed instruments, flipped them over, restrung them for a lefty and went on about his business.

If your daughter feels comfortable playing right-handed, go with it.
She'll have a wider choice of stock instruments at her disposal if she decides to pursue it.

Depending on how old she is and how far along she is, she can learn either way. As has been stated, right handed guitar selections are abundant. Out of convenience, making her a righty might be best but if during the course of her learning she decides to play left-handed, by all means let her. I play right handed and I am right-handed but a few months ago I decided to take on the task of learning to do some left-handed techniques. My finger dexterity on my right hand is MUCH better than my left, so I'm learning things faster. Ernie Isley is ambidexterous. He's one of the few guitarists that I've seen play both-handed. Good luck to her. Lots of practice will help her decide how she's going to play. Cross your fingers for right-handed. Belive me, the next guitar will be easier to get.

Interesting point. thumbs up!

That's the very reason I play left-handed being primarily a right-handed person.

I say that if she feels comfortable holding the guitar like a righty, then by all means she should learn to play that way. I'm left handed and when I took my first lesson in 1972, my teacher forced me to play as a righty. He said that he didn't know how to teach any other way. I believe that being left handed allows me to flow up and down the fretboard with ease.

Im left handed and when i went to buy a guitar the guy in the shop was a pure dick.
When i asked if he had any left handed guitars he went all high and mighty asking me how i knew i wanted a left handed guitar.
I said because i was left handed so he gave me one to hold and said hold it how it felt comfortable,so i naturally held it left handed and he was all you ve got it upside down.He couldnt fathom how i knew i wanted a left handed guitar when i was just wanting to learn.
He wasnt very helpful and he seemed quite snobbish and needless to say he didnt get a sale from me that day.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Sorry about your bad experience. That was terrible the way he talked down to you. Some people just weren't meant to work with the public.
