Mercury Music Prize 2006 So it's that time of year again.
The shortlist has been announced for this death knell for whichever band or artist happens to win it: - Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas - Editors - The Back Room - Guillemots - Through The Windowpane - Richard Hawley - Coles Corner - Hot Chip - The Warning - Muse - Black Holes And Revelations - Zoe Rahman - Melting Pot - Lou Rhodes - Beloved One - Scritti Politti - White Bread, Black Beer - Sway - This Is My Demo - Thom Yorke - The Eraser I haven't heard all of these. Of the ones I have, I adore the Guillemots, Muse, Sway and Thom Yorke albums. Lukewarm on the Arctic Monkeys and Editors albums. Does anyone care about this award anymore? But Marge! What if we chose the wrong religion? Each week we just make God madder and madder.

I just don't think this prize is relevant anymore. Its been slowly on the decline in the last few years ever since Dizzy Rascal won it. That was an absolute farce. I hate that guy so much.
Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Thom Yorke and Editors are the biggest names on the list but no doubt some unknown will win the prize and have a rush of sales for 2 weeks and that'll be that. Muse are the best British band at the moment - Fact. Thought i'd just leave you with that

Muse are the best British band at the moment - Fact. Thought i'd just leave you with that I think the Dizzy Rascal album was a pretty good album, personally. Tho' i haven't listened to it for at least a year, admittedly. My feelings about the Mercury Music Prize are mixed, to be honest. I like the idea in principle of an award which is actually aiming to reward innovation, and frankly any award is better than a Brit / Grammy, which have totally lost any semblance of credibility (if they ever had any). Also, in theory the MMP gives media attention to bands / artists that would otherwise get lost in the seas of stench that populates the airwaves. The problem is that in practice, the MMP is totally confused and seems to award it to the person they think that...i don't know...is the hippest person to award it to. Even if there are far better albums on the shortlist. Plus it covers so many different genres of music, which doesn't help. And finally, I think the Muse album is colossal. Not to say it's the best album of the year necessarily, or that they're the best band in the UK. But the album is stonkingly good. But Marge! What if we chose the wrong religion? Each week we just make God madder and madder.

I hope Editors win for "A Back Room" - what an amazing album that is.

[/quote] I agree with some of what you are saying, but Anthony and the Johnsons was hardly a 'hip' win was it? If so Franz Ferdinand would probably have won.. I am sooo pleased that Hot Chip have been nominated - their album is new and innovative and I'm just so excited that they're there... Muse or Thom Yorke will probably get it tho..
