Michael Jackson's first solo LP

Lets give it up for Michael Jackson's for solo album.

No, not this one:

But this one:

Originally, Got To Be There, the title cut was supposed to be a Jackson 5 single, until Berry found out that MGM's J5 clones, the Osmonds were releasing Donny Osmond solos.Joe didn't want Michael, or any of the boys to be put out in front of the group, but Berry won out. The LP charted at 14 Pop and 4 Soul.

Their is not one bad song on this LP, and you could play this album from start to finish. From the singles like the titl cut released in October of 71, charted at #4 on both charts. The next single Rockin' Robin (number 2 on both charts) wasn't even scheduled for release until DJ's started to play it like crazy. Motown then decided to release I Wanna Be Where You Are which was wierd for J5/Mike. not the song, but a 3rd single release. The J5 were usualy a 2 single and move to the next LP grouup. This charted at 16 Pop and 2 Soul.

Trivia:

Along with "Got To Be There" which solo releases by Michael, Jermaine and Jackie featured the other bruhz on background vocals?

i have a soft spot in my heart for that album, because my mom had a copy of it when i was a kid and i'd play it on my little turntable all the time.

"girl don't take your love from me" is the stuff.

Love this performance, but I hate the arrangement of the chorus in this song.
neutral It just doesn't...fit.

Yeah, I can definately relate to this album. I wrote a thread on the title track. MJ was soooo on fire at this time that he could have done an album with the cast from Sesame Street and it would have been bangin'. The album is good but the two stand out tracks for me is the title track and the wonderful "I Wanna Be Where You Are". The main thing that made Michael's material and this period of the J5 in general soooo fucking good was the musicianship on these tracks. The J5 had use of some of the best musicians in the world and the musicians really seemed to take it to another level whenever they did a session for the J5. I really adore the J5's and Michael's overall sound during this period. 71 and 72 was the band's peak years. From the excellent songwriting to the insanely great basslines to the orchestrations.

nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."
